Tempe thumps Seton, avoids finishing in East Sky cellar

By Devin Hicks, For the Tribune

Friday night was all about ending the season with a win at Tempe High.

Although both teams’ chances of making the playoffs were ended weeks ago, Tempe (4-6, 2-3) was able to avoid a tie for last place in the 4A East Sky Region with its 46-26 win over Chandler Seton Catholic (2-8, 0-5).

“It’s great to send our seniors out with a win,” said Tempe coach John Rodriguez.

Four different Buffaloes scored touchdowns, three from running back Dylan Jodsaas. He finished with 95 rushing yards on eight carries.

Seton relied on the pass to keep the game close early, getting the ball to wide receiver Nick Gleiser as much as possible. Gleiser finished with 12 catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

The first half began and ended with a Sentinels touchdown but was dominated by the Buffaloes in between.

After converting a fake punt on a fourth-and-12 play, Seton struck first when quarterback Lucas McCarville rolled and ran in for an 8-yard touchdown.

The Buffaloes answered with three straight touchdowns, the first two coming from running back Joe Rittenhouse on a 32-yard reception and an 11-yard run.

Gleiser’s 13-yard touchdown catch from McCarville closed the Buffaloes’ lead to 27-14 at halftime.

But touchdown runs of 15 and 5 yards by Jodsaas and a 1-yard TD run by reserve running back Billy Hammel sealed the game for the Buffaloes.
