Brophy wins 5A Desert Valley title

By Andrew Nordmeier, For the Tribune

Phoenix Brophy Prep secured a home date for at least the first round of the Class 5A playoffs after beating Glendale Mountain Ridge 28-3 Friday night at Phoenix College.

Brophy (8-2, 3-0) also claimed the Desert Valley Region championship with the win over the Mountain Lions (7-3, 2-1). The Broncos’ final standing in the power rankings and first-round opponent is unknown.

“We’ve won four in a row and won them handily,” Brophy coach Scooter Molander said, “We made some big plays tonight.”

Mountain Ridge sits in the eighth spot in the power rankings ahead of Basha High.

“We don’t quit,” Mountain Ridge coach Bobby Green said. “Whoever we get we’re going to give them everything we got. We’ll bounce back just fine.”

Brophy started the scoring with a 90-yard touchdown by Bobby Rodrigues as he knifed through the Mountain Ridge defense. He finished with 113 yards on eight carries and caught two passes for 34 yards.

“I got two great seal blocks,” Rodrigues said about his run around the right side, “After that, everyone was hustling and throwing blocks 40 yards downfield.”

Brophy’s passing game took over, and two different quarterbacks threw touchdown passes.

Bryan Berens connected with Sean Lieb on a 31-yard scoring strike to make it 14-0 with 3:03 left in the first quarter.

Lieb caught a screen pass from Drew Maggi and raced down the sideline for a 45-yard score and a 21-0 Brophy Prep lead with 2:09 left in the first half. He struck again on a 13-yard catch in the last two minutes for his third TD of the night.

Mountain Ridge’s Jeff Locke hit a 47-yard field goal in the closing seconds to avoid the shutout for the Mountain Lions.

“Our defense was flying around the football,” Molander said.

“They brought the heat and if you can protect you’re in business."
