On a wild and wacky final Friday of the 4A and 5A football regular seasons, Gilbert Mesquite scored the biggest victory, topping Gilbert Highland 54-32 to grab the final postseason slot in 5A Division I.

The Wildcats, who were tied for 18th in the power points coming into the night, will be rewarded with a matchup next week at No. 1 Chandler Hamilton. Mesquite’s win knocked out Phoenix Mountain Pointe, which finished five points back.

Twelve other schools from the East Valley also qualified for the 5A-I playoffs, including all five schools from the East Valley Region.

In 5A-II, four of the five teams from the Pima Region qualified, led by Phoenix Pinnacle and Tempe Marcos de Niza. The Padres beat Mesa Desert Ridge to win the region, but opponent victories allowed the Pioneers to leapfrog Marcos, which has one more win than Pinnacle, for the No. 2 seed. Marcos is No. 3. Peoria Centennial is No. 1.

Final seeding in 4A-I won’t be determined until today, but it is known that Scottsdale Saguaro, which beat Glendale Cactus to complete an undefeated regular season, will be the top seed. Tempe McClintock and Avondale Agua Fria tied for No. 15 and a coin flip today will determine who gets that seed and who is No. 16. Three other 4A-I teams from the East Valley are playoff bound.

Five E.V. schools also will be in the 4A-II playoffs. With victories, Scottsdale Notre Dame jumped from the No. 4 seed to the No. 3 seed and Queen Creek moved up from seventh to sixth. Gilbert Higley fell from third to seventh. Scottsdale Coronado qualified with a victory over rival Phoenix Arcadia, which will be the No. 15 seed.
