Red Mountain tramples Basha
By Andrew Nordmeier, Tribune
The Mesa Red Mountain Mountain Lions ran like cheetahs through the Chandler Basha defense, gaining 314 yards on 62 carries en route to a 21-0 win in the second round of the Class 5A-I playoffs Friday night at Red Mountain.

With the win and the Thanksgiving holiday, Red Mountain (10-2) gets a week off before tangling with Phoenix Desert Vista, a 17-7 winner over Mountain View, in the state semifinals.
“I think right now it’s a chance for us to get freshened up mentally,” Red Mountain coach Jim Jones said about the bye week. “Hopefully it’s going to be good for us.”
The time off may come in handy against a tough Desert Vista squad.
“I’ve always thought Desert Vista is one of the more talented teams in the state,” Jones said. “If there’s a dark horse in the state, it’s Desert Vista.”
Against Basha, the Red Mountain defense threw its second straight shutout in the playoffs and third of the season.
“Our defensive front seven just stymied them,” Jones said. “You could tell their offensive line was getting very frustrated.
“The winning starts up front on both sides of the football.”
The catalyst of the ground game was Jarison Johnson, who knifed through the Bears defense for 147 yards on 28 carries. But the rest of the Mountain Lions’ ground attack accounted for an additional 164 yards.
“What’s happening is that everyone started keying on Jarison and the other kids are starting to come through,” Jones said about the balanced rushing attack. “We’re well-rounded back there with (Sean) Parsons, (Taylor) Sare, Jarison and (Kelvin) Pruitt.”
Basha, the No. 10 seed, was hampered by penalties throughout the game. The Bears were hit with 13 penalties for 130 yards, including three personal fouls. The penalties left the Bears with 34 yards of offense for the game.
“It worked against our guys all night. Everything went against us,” Basha coach Tim McBurney said. “It’ll be interesting to see on film.”
Red Mountain scored first when Taylor Perkins found Pruitt wide open in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown pass with 16.3 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Perkins added a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Sare capped the scoring with a 13-yard run in the third quarter.
