Chaparral shuts out Millennium
By Tom Gibbons, For the Tribune
Goodyear Millennium’s defense was as good as advertised. Scottsdale Chaparral’s defense was better.
The visiting Firebirds showed they have more than just a high-powered offense, shutting down Millennium on Friday in a 20-0 win in the 4A-I football quarterfinals.
Chaparral advanced to the state semifinals for the third straight season where it will meet Scottsdale Saguaro on Nov. 30.
The Firebirds (10-2) held the Tigers (9-3) to nine first downs and 129 net yards. Chaparral recovered two fumbles and intercepted three passes.
The Firebirds had heard plenty about the Tigers’ defense.
“Hey, they read the papers, too,’’ Chaparral coach Charlie Ragle said. “Our coaching staff did a great job of coming up with a scheme. … The kids believed in the scheme. This shows what they can do when they believe.”
Millennium’s defense was impressive, too. The Firebirds were limited to 204 yards, 83 on the ground. Most of that came on the final drive late in the fourth quarter.
Chaparral quarterback Spencer Stone was the closest thing the game had to an offensive star. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for one, finishing with 126 yards passing.
“We depended on our quarterback to make plays all season long,’’ Ragle said. “He did it when we needed him to tonight.”
Millennium was hurt by losing the turnover battle 5-2. The Tigers also were penalized 12 times for 100 yards.
“The teams that can win the turnovers tend to be the teams that win in November and December,’’ Ragle said.
Chaparral looked like the team that was going to make the most mistakes. The Firebirds fumbled three times in the first quarter, but lost just one. Stone was intercepted, killing the Firebirds’ first scoring chance.
The Firebirds got the ball back at their own 22 with 9:10 left in the half. Aided by a couple of penalties the Firebirds drove and scored on a 2-yard pass from Stone to Tyler Williams with 47 seconds left in the half.
Stone and Williams hooked up on a 14-yard pass midway through the fourth quarter to make it 13-0. Stone’s 2-yard run finished the scoring.
