Peoria too much for McClintock
By Cary L. Tyler, For the Tribune
Jamal Miles had a memorable night, rushing for five touchdowns, throwing for one, and grabbing an interception in Peoria High’s 53-17 rout of visiting Tempe McClintock in the second round of the 4A-I state football playoffs.
Miles, who rushed 15 times for 138 yards, quickly put any thoughts of a McClintock upset to rest when he scored the first of his two touchdowns in the first seven minutes of play.
Peoria coach Doug Clapp said Miles is at least one of the top three backs he has worked with.
“He is the most complete one we’ve had,” Clapp said.
“He can catch, he can run, he can block, and he can play defensive back as well.”
After Miles’ fast start, the 10-2 Panthers continued to pounce on the Chargers, rolling to a 33-3 halftime lead and never looking back.
“We moved the ball, but we didn’t finish possessions,” said McClintock coach Mike Gibbons.
“We never really stopped them. They had outstanding speed on the perimeter that we had difficulty containing.
“Whoever plays them next is going to have a lot to deal with.”
The night was not a total wash for McClintock (5-7).
Chargers senior quarterback Kelly Kurzman, despite four interceptions, played solid throughout the game. He completed 23 of 41 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns.
He also rushed 13 times for 76 yards.
The Chargers had 21 first downs and 454 total yards but got bogged down when they reached the red zone.
Miles was not the only offensive weapon for Peoria.
Ezra Sanchez of the Panthers also had a big night, rushing 13 times for 107 yards.
Gibbons said he was very proud of his team’s season.
“Most people did not expect us to be here,” Gibbons said. “We’ve got plenty to build on.
“Our seniors set the tradition of going to the state playoffs and leaving a great legacy for our underclassmen.”
