Notre Dame defies odds, grinds out win for title shot

Fourth-down strategy pays off for Notre Dame
Not only were the Saints matched up against an experienced Gilbert Higley team looking for a return trip to the 4A-II state football title game but they were also playing in a constant rain that flooded the field before the opening kickoff and turned it into a marsh by halftime.
The conditions were less than ideal for a team that had relied so heavily on the strong arm of quarterback Sean Renfree and the quick feet and soft hands of receiver Brandon Hirneise all season and more suited for the Knights’ physical, run-first, -second and -third style of play.
By efficiently executing a ball-control game plan, converting two key fourth downs and taking advantage of two turnovers — the only two of the game — the Saints overcame all obstacles in front of them to pull out a 15-14 victory on Friday at Tempe High and advance to the championship game in only their third year of varsity play.
“It’s a great feeling,” said running back Patrick Foley, who rushed 14 times for a game-high 70 yards. “Last year was disappointment when we lost in the first round. … We’re really excited.”
The Saints’ opponent in next Friday’s title game will be Cottonwood Mingus, which eliminated them last year 41-27. The matchup is one Notre Dame (12-1) has been anticipating for a long time.
“I’ve been thinking about Mingus in the back of my head since they beat us last year in the playoffs,” coach Scot Bemis said. “They’re a well-coached football team, and it’s going to be a fun one to watch.”
Friday’s game was as well. After a tight first three quarters of play, it appeared Higley was on its way to a second straight title game when Alex Jentzen capped an eight-play, 73-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to put his team up 14-9 with 5:46 remaining.
A short time later, Notre Dame was in trouble, facing a fourth-and-2 from its own 42. The Saints, though, remained calm and picked up 31 yards on a Statue of Liberty play.
“We’ve been working on that a lot,” said Foley, who ran the ball on the play. “We’ve been practicing that for about seven or eight weeks. We finally pulled it out when we needed it, and it worked. It was great.”
A 5-yard pass from Renfree to Hirneise capped the eight-play, 66-yard drive but the Saints led by only one with 2:27 left after their two-point conversion failed.
Three plays later, Saints safety Andy Wilder sealed the game when he intercepted a floating pass from Trey Gray.
“I saw the corner slip and I knew I had to get over there. Then I just stuck my hands out and it fell right in my hands.”
Notre Dame’s first touchdown came on a fourth-down play following a Higley fumble inside its 10-yard line, and the Saints won the time of possession battle as well, running 72 plays to the Knights’ 34. Notre Dame’s defense also came up big, stopping Higley four times on third-and-long (more than 5 yards).
“The third- and fourth-and-long killed us all night,” Knights coach Jim Beall said.

Disappointed Fan
I am a disappointed Higley fan. I question some of the coaching moves, let the kids play the game.1. GO FOR 2. Have 4 points and decide to kick the extra point to go up 5, THEN A PENALTY TO MAKE IT HALF THE DISTANCE. We are a good running team, but not good enought to get 1 1/2 yards. If we go up six, they have to kick the extra point in the slop.
2. 2:22 left in the game and we are huddling and running the ball. I know we don't have a passing game, but after 2 run plays clock is at 1:35 and we have over 40 yards to go. No hurry up offense is a poorly planned team.
3. Drop 8 into coverage all night against their QB. I understand he had only 12 completions, but time in the pocket was outrageous. He had huge throws when needed (3 and 27)! Also, they go 5 wide and have their running back in motion, our middle linebacker chases and nobody is left in the middle of the field! They have 5 on 3, and Renfree made us pay on some huge runs.
This loss is hard to take, everything favored us.

NDP IS Fantastic
I would like to say that everyone at Tempe High stadium in the rain last night knew that the Highley Knights were a superior running team over the Passing Saints. The big difference in this game, since it was played in the constant rain all night long which did not favor the passing superiority of the NPD Saints was three very important and vital elements that you will not neccessarily see in the stat sheets.
1. Heart... The NDP players played with a sense of purpose and Heart that makes a Champion rise up and make special things happen, when their backs are against the wall.
Highley last night on paper, may have been the better running team, Notre Dame was a team of special purpose and heart and was not going to be denied last night.
2. The Crowd was incredible, They never quit and they never faltered, they were the Twelfth player on that field. They Believed as the team believed that this game was within their grasp. The Crowd lifted our players and gave them the extra boost to believe that the outcome will go Notre Dames way. " Although the odds be great or small ole Notre Dame will win overall, while her loyal sons go marching onward to Victory...."
3. The NDP coaching staff, where superior in play calling and better executiion last night. Highley was the more physical team, But Beamis and his staff were better prepared and smarter when it came to play selection, to keep NDP in the game and at striking distance the whole game, Look at the NDP offense poccession time.
These intangibles and the saying its not the size of the Dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the Dog that makes a Champion.
Heart, Crowd, Belief and Coaching ,what a mix of intangible that makes Notre Dame the team of Destiny this year..... Suggest removal of this comment

Knights Are Fantastic!
The only thing I can agree with you on is the coaching. I've seen Higley do better. The other 2 items...no way. The Higley crowd was in it all the way and our boys had heart 'til the end. The weather was the main factor. But it's done...shoulda'...coulda'...woulda'...see you next year...Good luck with Mingus...you're gonna need it. Suggest removal of this commentDecember 2, 2007

What (NDP is Fantastic) is trying to say is that both teams had good coaching, crowds and heart but in the end it was NDP who had the BETTER coaching, BIGGER crowd and the MOST heart to win the game. Also just to point out i think the weather favored Higley just because it was harder for NDP's recievers to run their routes and it was hard for Renfree to throw. In the end, I think the better team won (NDP). Suggest removal of this commentDecember 2, 2007
Knights Are Fantastic!
And the final one point proved that? You could say NDP is the better team if there was a huge difference in the score but there wasn't. (15-14)The game ended on a lucky interception...the call could have gone either way. Higley caught an interception the same exact way in the first half and it was ruled a dropped pass. It's all judgement by the refs. As I said previously...I don't believe the BETTER TEAM WON....to each his own. Suggest removal of this commentDecember 2, 2007

NDP 12th man
(Knights are Fantastic!) NDP was the better team, pure and simple. The strength of Renfree's arm and the finese of the NDP recievers effectively turned off due to the weather, Bemis had to turn to the weakest part of the NDP playbook: the ground game. After this switch, and the weather which favored the ground-and-pound higley, it put the saints up against the wall. Bemis is (In my opinion) the best coach in all of 4A football, I saw him out on the field overwatering it and soaking the ball to practice with, to predict the conditions. You might not believe that the better team won, it is your opinion. But all that matters is that Notre Dame is gonna be playing at cardinal stadium and Higley is not. garbage
Saints DIDN'T WIN THEIR REGION. Mingus will stomp them. ND is highly overrated, I know they are in the finals, but seriously 4 II is not that strong. All they have is Renfree, he makes all the recievers. Suggest removal of this commentDecember 4, 2007
Saints 12th man
(Garbage) Lets break this down, shall we?1. "Saints didnt win their region". No, we did not. but is this the first time a team makes it to the championship without winning their region? no.
2. "Mingus will stomp them" Isnt that for the players to decide? not some punk on a newspaper site.
3. "ND is highly overrated" Dont confuse overrated with attention. Notre dame has had numerous amounts of publicity over the past years, but has any of it been "NDP is the best" or along those lines? No. next time read the article, and not just headlines.
4. "4A II is not that strong." Maybe not, but it is the region we are playing with, and it is one hell of a competitive region with numerous amazing schools.
5. "All they have is Renfree" ....let me list off some names for you that contribute just as much to the success of NDP. Cameron, Ramirez, Tidmarsh, Grosvenor, Hirneise, Briehl, Lafferty, Riggio. We are called the Notre Dame SAINTS for a reason, not the Notre Dame Renfrees. There are 11 men on the field, not 1 or 2.
6. "He makes all the recievers". Moot point, all QBs are responsible for bringing out both the talent and athleticism of each reciever. As an example, look at Randy Moss. Last year, sitting back on the worst team in the league and with one QB change, he has turned into the superstar he always was. The QBs do not make the recievers, the recievers do not make the QB's, it is to make the chemistry between them as simple as playing catch. Which is one thing Renfree has, friendship and chemistry with his recievers.

Gar
I watched all of those players play. Ramierez, 5-7 150 lb linebacker, wow what a stud. He is absolutely amazing. Hirneise is o.k, nothing special. Tidmarsh, Briehl, Lafferty, Riggio have done absoluetly nothing. They don't stand out at all, give me a break. You are acting like ND has 10 all-state players. The region.... Greenway, Cortez 2-8, glendale 3-5, MV 5-5, Washington 6-4. Washington was the best team in there (losses to Cactus, and 2 Mingus). But that is not a standout region.
Probably have the same chemistry as Renfree and Greco from last year. hasn't that been a problem this year too? Greco is 10 times better than Hirniese.
Enjoy the few more days of hope. On Saturday, I will post again, after the onslaught Suggest removal of this comment

Hey "Gar" why didn't you post again after Mingus' slaughter... O, Wait Mingus didn't slaughter anyone but i believe they are the ones who got slaughter by the finese NDP. The only thing that you said was right was the Ramierez is a Stud. You are one of many people who doubted my team but while you go cry yourself to sleep i'll be fitting my state champs ring. I Got two words for you "gar"STATE CHAMPIONS

higley senior starter
i see all this trash talkin and i see no class. i would love to sit and argue that higley should have won the game but there isnt anything that a person can do now to change it. we had a good run and had many plays that were big on both sides. if we could have played in any condition we would have still had a huge fight and a real close game. to all the saints players i say way to play hard and win state. wish we could have gone back to the dome but its better to hae known we held our own with the best in 4A-II. im sure i will cross some of your paths in college ball so good luck in college and way to play hard til the end. Saints 12th Man
Higley Senior Starter, Thank yo for your words, really, it means alot. Yes, we are from Scottsdale, and yes, we do have (argubally) the best QB in the southwest, but we are not immortals. We lost to Washington (AT OUR HOMECOMING!!!), and also had numerous close games including Bradshaw and you. I enjoyed watching both teams play, and really look foward to reading about a Higley vs. NDP championship next year and making my flight down. Now get your Juniors in the weight room, they have alot of work ahead of them,as do we.
