Westview advances to 1st title game

By Steve Heath, For the Tribune

The center of Hoy Stadium’s Hogan Field was under water from goal line to goal line.

It didn’t seem to bother Avondale Westview’s Reggie Nicholson.

Through the muck and yuck of a daylong downpour, the senior running back scored four touchdowns to lead the Knights to their first trip to a state title football game.

No. 6 Westview defeated No. 10 Phoenix South Mountain 48-6 in a Class 5A-II state semifinal game at Phoenix College Friday.

Westview will play defending state champ Peoria Centennial for the state title next Friday at University of Phoenix Stadium.

“It feels good,” said Nicholson of the school — which opened in 1989 — getting its first trip to the finale. “We’re looking to make some noise in the state playoff game.”

Nicholson scored on runs of 11, 4, 5 and 75 yards and finished with 150 rushing yards on 15 carries.

“It was real hard (to run in these conditions),” said Nicholson. “You couldn’t cut. You just had to pound the rock and run hard.”

South Mountain, on the other hand, didn’t have near the success. The Jaguars had just one first-half first down.
