Pinnacle’s Ciliento breaks state scoring record
By Andrew Nordmeier, For the Tribune
If we’ve told you once, we’ve told you a hundred times, Kyle Ciliento scored a goal in a varsity game for Phoenix Pinnacle High School.
After Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over Phoenix Cortez in the Moon Valley Invitational, you can say we told you a state-record 111 times.
Ciliento’s goal in the 20th minute pushed him past Tucson Salpointe Catholic’s Fernando Gauna’s large-school record of 110 career goals and on to the top of the all-time scoring leaderboard.
“It means a lot to me and I couldn’t do it without my teammates,” Ciliento said. “It makes it so much better having done it with them.”
The record-breaking goal came as a product of good hustle and fancy footwork. He took a pass and found himself on the left-wing side of the field. He cutback around a pair of Cortez defenders and found himself with a wide open shooting lane.
His right-footed missile from the top of the arc curled just inside the far post and past the outstretched hands of the diving Cortez keeper for the record.
“I got the ball. They opened up the space for me. I cut it inside, saw the shot on the 18 (yard line), ripped it and it went in,” Ciliento said about the goal.
His coach sees how special Ciliento is, as well as the team around him.
“He’s been doing it since his freshman year,” Pinnacle coach Brock Heykoop said. “The bottom line is he has a great cast around him. He has a knack for the goal and a great finishing ability not a lot of guys possess.”
Ciliento, the state’s leading scorer this season with 11 goals and eight assists, picked up an assist on the third Pinnacle goal when he fed Jordan Wade, who buried the crossing pass in the back of the net.
“I want to go for the record for a season of 47 (goals) and get 48,” Ciliento said. “Most importantly, get around the same amount of assists to get my teammates involved as much as possible.”
George Malki got Pinnacle on the board nine minutes in when his blast found the lower left corner of the net from 25 yards out.
Pinnacle is undefeated this season (4-0) and has outscored its opponents 27-0. Connor Redd picked up his fourth straight shutout to open the season.
Cortez fell to 0-2.
“I want to break it by as many as possible so it lives as long as possible,” Ciliento said about pushing the record.
“I want to break it by 30 or so.”
