Corona girls slog way to victory

By Greg Demmitt, For the Tribune

Tempe Corona del Sol continued its domination of the Tempe Diablo Classic and also Central Region foe Phoenix Desert Vista with a 1-0 win in the girls soccer tournament at the Tempe Sports Complex on Friday.

Playing in conditions more normally found in England, both teams slogged through the muddy field until Aztec Brittany Cole found the net from about 15 feet.

“It was all bouncing around in the mud and I just stopped it and shot it,” the senior said.

The Thunder (4-2) pressured Corona (6-0) throughout but continued to struggle against a team that beat them four of five times last year, including in the finals of both this tournament and the state tournament.

“It was crazy,” Corona senior goalkeeper Lauren Mitchell said. “We worked really hard and I think we played our best. It was crazy with all the mud and the rain. It was a really fun game.

“We didn’t put away our opportunities and they did.”

Aztecs coach Matt Smith said he didn’t make a lot of changes for the weather conditions.

“We tried to play a little simpler than we normally play,” Smith said. “We really like to knock the ball around a lot.

“It comes out to gutting it out and trying to make something happen. I’m amazed at the level of play from both these teams under these conditions.”

Corona has now won five of the past six Classics sponsored by the Tempe Diablos. It won the consolation bracket in the only year it didn’t win the championship.

Corona had 14 shots on goal and Desert Vista had 12. Smith lauded the play of senior goalkeeper Nicole Burt, who stepped in for Hailey Hayes who was injured on Thursday.

“Nicole comes out and shuts out one of the best teams in the state. She did the same thing in the state finals last year.”
