Mesa holiday tournaments loaded with college prospects

By Les Willsey, Tribune

Fifteen teams with winning records from Arizona, Ohio, California and Utah invade Mesa Wednesday for four days of high-caliber prep boys basketball at the inaugural Arizona Basketball Challenge at Mesa Mountain View High School.

Mesa district athletic director Steve Hogen and Mesa recreation coordinator Marc Beasley put forth time and energy to construct a local holiday tournament with quality competition from Arizona and four teams from outside the state.

Games will be played Wednesday through Saturday starting at 9 a.m. and continuing through late evening. Teams play in pools the first three days. Matchups will be determined for Saturday’s games after Friday’s play. There will be no official tournament champion.

“A lot of our teams have gone out of state to play in some good holiday tournaments,” Hogen said. “We thought it might be nice to try it ourselves and see if we could attract some good teams here. We think this field is pretty good.”

Four out-of-state teams are in town sporting winning records. They are Cincinnati (Ohio) Taft (6-1), Cleveland Heights, Ohio (8-0), San Diego Horizon (6-3) and Provo, Utah (4-2). The rest are from Arizona — including three-time 5A-I champion Mountain View (9-1); 2A champ Chandler Valley Christian (6-2); 4A-I power Scottsdale Saguaro (9-3); and 5A-II Phoenix Pinnacle (10-2), last year’s 4A-I runner-up.

Other local teams competing are Mesa Red Mountain (9-5), Gilbert Highland (10-3), Chandler Hamilton (6-1) and Mesa Dobson (5-5).

A few players to watch in the tournament who have signed letters of intent to play in college next year are University of Arizona signees Brendon Lavender (6-foot-4 guard from Mountain View) and Jeff Withey (a 7-0 center from San Diego Horizon); Highland guard Nick Witherill (Washington State); Cleveland Heights 6-6 forward Travis Kelce (University of Cincinnati football and basketball) and Pinnacle 6-8 center Taylor Rohde (Arizona State).

Also back with a long tradition is the annual McClintock Holiday Shootout at Tempe McClintock High. The tournament begins Wednesday and continues through Saturday.

Games Wednesday, Thursday and Friday begin at 10 a.m. and continue through late evening. The championship game is set for 5 p.m. Saturday.

Marquee teams in the McClintock field are Scottsdale Horizon (8-4), which won its own tournament two weeks ago; Glendale Mountain Ridge (10-3); Chandler (9-4) and Mesa Desert Ridge (6-2).

Tempe Corona del Sol, Phoenix Brophy, Phoenix St. Mary’s and Tempe Marcos de Niza are all under .500, but have played tough schedules to date.
