Prep highlights: Pinnacle edges Hamilton

Phoenix Pinnacle rallied in the final minute Thursday to edge Chandler Hamilton 66-65 on the second day of action of the Arizona Basketball Challenge at Mesa Mountain View High School.

ASU-bound center Taylor Rhode scored 33 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the Pioneers improved to 11-3 on the season and 1-1 in the tournament. Ryan Evans and John Jackson scored 18 points each to lead Hamilton (8-2), which suffered its first loss of the tourney after winning twice Wednesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

In other Arizona Basketball Challenge games, Brandon Davies scored from the lane on an inbound pass at the buzzer to lift Provo (Utah) over Red Mountain, 47-45, in overtime. Davies scored a game-high 14 points. Paul Newendyke and Keawe Enos led Red Mountain (10-6) with 12 points each. …

Dobson (6-6) couldn’t hold a five-point lead midway through the second half and fell to San Diego Horizon (Calif.) 44-41. Arizona-bound center Jeff Withey led Horizon with 15 points. …

Jake Zimmerman scored two goals to lead Gilbert over Phoenix Carl Hayden, 5-2, at the Dobson Mustang Classic at Red Mountain Sports Complex. Gilbert (6-4) is now 2-0 in the tournament.

GIRLS SOCCER

Este Rea scored two second-half goals as Corona del Sol broke a scoreless tie at halftime to beat Highland 4-0 in the Mustang Classic. Lexie Schroeder and Angela Williamson scored for Corona.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dariff Bluhm’s 16 points and 13 rebounds led Saguaro to a 51-47 victory over Brentwood (Calif.) in a first-round game of the Nike Tournament of Champions at Chandler Hamilton High School. …
