Saguaro turns tables on Red Mountain with big 2nd half
By Les Willsey, Tribune
Mesa Red Mountain boys basketball coach Greg Sessions never knows which one of his teams is going to show up.
On Friday afternoon he saw both. The second one, the one he doesn’t care to view, stayed too long.
Scottsdale Saguaro took advantage of Red Mountain’s subpar second half and kicked into gear to post a 70-58 victory on the third day of play at the inaugural Arizona Basketball Challenge at Mesa Mountain View High School.
Saguaro improved to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the tournament behind 27 points from Matt Rhodes and 24 from Tyler Tompkins. Rhodes scored 14 of his 27 in the second half and Tompkins 16 in the second half. That’s the half that turned the game in Saguaro’s favor.
“The first half they killed us on the boards and we were settling for the first shot we saw and that was from outside,” Saguaro coach Bob LaRue said. “They have some size inside and nothing intimidates more than size in high school. We had to start attacking the basket to get back in the game.”
Red Mountain (10-7) dropped its second straight tournament game after an opening-day win. The Mountain Lions amassed a 26-16 lead with about five minutes to play in the first half thanks to scoring inside from Deonte Roberts and an outside presence from Keawe Enos (10 points each). But Saguaro managed to close the deficit to three by halftime. Just when it looked as if Red Mountain might run away again with a 46-38 lead with 11 minutes left, things went south for the Mountain Lions as Saguaro became more aggressive in all facets.
Saguaro went on a 20-0 run for a 58-46 lead with 6:12 to go. The lead remained in double digits and Red Mountain couldn’t reduce it to less than 10 the rest of the way.
Tompkins’ output was particularly impressive as he connected on 11 of 17 shots. Saguaro shot 31 percent from the field the first half and its resolve to take the ball to the basket paid off with its 59 percent shooting after intermission.
Saguaro avenged an earlier 69-58 loss to Red Mountain in the season opener for both teams at the Salpointe Tipoff Classic in November.
Roberts led Red Mountain with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Enos finished with 17 points. Red Mountain closes the tournament at 7 p.m. today against San Diego Horizon Christian.
Saguaro winds up play at 5:30 p.m. against Cleveland Heights (Ohio).
