Marcos de Niza's last-second shot upsets Horizon

By Jeff Hoodzow, For the Tribune

Tempe Marcos de Niza's Daniel Johnson put back a missed shot as time expired, helping the 13th-seeded Padres complete a fourth-quarter comeback and upset No. 4 seed Scottsdale Horizon 78-76 in the first round of the 5A Division II boys state basketball tournament Wednesday at Horizon.

Johnson, the Padres' soft-spoken center, finished the game with 15 points, but none were bigger than the final two. Trailing throughout the game, Marcos tied the game in the final two minutes.

With the score 76-76, the Padres had the ball with 15 seconds remaining. Two contested shots missed, but Johnson was in the right place at the right time to score the uncontested game-winner.

"I was just trying to get the offensive rebound and put it back up as quickly as I can," Johnson said. "There really wasn't a lot of time, but I just went straight up with it."

The win was Marcos' second straight over Horizon in the fifth meeting of the two teams this year. The previous win came in the Pima Region tournament, a victory coach David Stark believed put the momentum in the Padres' court.

"To get them two in a row is a tough task," Stark said. "I knew we could play with them, it was just a matter of getting on the same page."

The loss spoiled a tremendous performance by Horizon's Eric McGaffin, who ended his high school career with a 37-point performance. Fellow senior Nick Streff added 21 points.

The Padres finished with five players in double figures, led by Johnson and senior guard Harrison Evans, who finished with 16.

Marcos advances to take on another region rival, No. 5 Desert Ridge, which defeated No. 12 Tucson Rincon in the first round. Just like with Horizon, Marcos has a very familiar relationship with the Jaguars - they have played them three times this year, posting a 1-2 record. The one win also came in the region playoffs.

"They are a lot like us," Stark said. "Some nights they are impressive, but some nights they are beatable."

McGaffin has so much upside based on his B-ball IQ and skill level, is he being recruited? Somebody is missing out on a possible double figure guy that really makes his team better. Suggest removal of this comment
