Softball notes: Highland’s Haro sidelined indefinitely

By Les Willsey, Tribune

Athlete of the week: Katelyn Boyd - The Scottsdale Horizon junior opened the season hitting .750 (9-for-12) with eight RBIs, five walks and a pair of doubles and triples each. Horizon won the Dobson-Marcos de Niza Invitational as well.

Horizon added a win Tuesday, knocking off Mesa Mountain View, 7-2. Boyd doubled and homered in the win, drove in two runs and scored twice.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

Gilbert Highland standout pitcher-infielder Talor Haro is out of action indefinitely with knee and shoulder injuries suffered in the season-opening Lion Country Classic.

Haro made a couple of dives and banged up a knee. She pitched with the knee soreness and compensated too much with her shoulder. After pitching two games, the shoulder became sore. Highland is having Haro sit until therapy for the shoulder enables her to return to full health.

Waiting for a challenge: Defending 5A-I state champ Phoenix St. Mary’s is off to a rousing start, but apparently won’t get tested until it plays its first invitational March 12-15 (Nike Invitational in Long Beach, Calif.). St. Mary’s won its first three games by shutout with 23-0, 36-0 and 20-0 wins over Mesa Westwood, Phoenix Central and Phoenix North, respectively. The Knights play in the top-notch Desert Mountain Invitational March 25-29, but most of their toughest foes will come in region play. They will play a triple round-robin with region foes Scottsdale Desert Mountain, Phoenix Xavier and Glendale Mountain Ridge.

Field dedication: Scottsdale Chaparral renamed its softball field after former coach Jeff Oscarson last week. Oscarson led the team to five state titles in his 22 years at the helm before retiring in 2004. The Firebirds’ new field house was named after the late Dave Braga, who has a daughter, Tessa, on the team. Dave Braga died of pancreatic cancer in 2006.

Looking ahead: The annual McClintock-Marcos de Niza Invitational is Saturday through Wednesday at McClintock and Marcos de Niza high schools in Tempe. The field has changed somewhat this year with several local school districts not sharing the same spring break. Mesa, Mesa Dobson, Mesa Mountain View, Gilbert and Gilbert Highland have been replaced by Avondale La Joya, Chandler, Chandler Basha, Apache Junction and Phoenix Xavier. Basha, Corona and Xavier are the teams to watch in this tournament.
