Valley Christian boys, girls open big leads in defense of track crowns

By Jeff Hoodzow, For the Tribune

Chandler Valley Christian continued its track and field dominance of the 2A conference, storming into first place in both the boys and girls state meets Friday at Mesa Community College.

The boys, the defending champions, got off to a quick start, scoring 43.5 points and opening a commanding lead against Phoenix Northwest Christian (17 points) and Tombstone (16). Scottsdale Christian (15) and Keams Canyon Hopi (14) rounded out the top five.

Leading the charge for the boys was pole vaulter Daniel Fanelli, who broke his own meet record by clearing 15 feet.

While he was still half a foot shy of his personal best, he did have to deal with a full plate on the day, also qualifying for three other events.

Also on the boys side, Scottsdale Christian’s Isaiah Klassen took the title in the 1,600-meter run in 4:22.53. The junior finished third in the event last year.

In the girls competition, Valley Christian (52.5 points) outdistanced Morenci (19) and Thatcher (17) for the early lead. The 12-time defending state champions also led Yuma Catholic (14) and Camp Verde (12).

Several of Valley Christian’s points came in the 3,200-meter relay, which saw the team of Brielle Smith, Andrea Alley, Kate Gaab and Ashton Wolf hold off Camp Verde for the win with a time of 10:16.06.

With the race close with 400 meters remaining, Wolf put on the jets, sprinting to the finish to give Valley Christian an easy win.

“The last time I let up near the end, I lost,” Wolf said. “So now I always sprint through the finish.”

In the pole vault, Valley Christian’s Sarah Meehan won with a vault of 10 feet, and the Trojans took the top five spots.
