Chandler zips past Xavier to take 5A-I crown
By John Mahnke, For the Tribune
It was difficult to tell whether Chandler’s Larissa Matthews and Phoenix Xavier’s Jessica Tonn were more tired from their competitions, or from climbing the awards stand.

Both athletes earned four state titles at the 5A Division I track and field championships Saturday at Phoenix Desert Vista High School.
Both earned three individual titles — Tonn in the distance events and Matthews in hurdles and sprints — plus a relay title.
But at night’s end, Matthews climbed to the top one more time, as Chandler defended its team title with 141½ points for its third consecutive team championship.
Xavier totaled 99 points to repeat a second-place finish.
“Winning the team title is what it’s all about,” Matthews said.
She defended her state title in the 100 hurdles with a personal-best 13.86 seconds, which will move her up from her No. 10 ranking nationally in the event.
After winning the hurdles, she won the 100 dash a few minutes later in 12.14 seconds. An hour later, she anchored the 400 relay to victory.
The junior completed her night by winning the 300 hurdles in 43.42 seconds.
“The night Larissa had was fabulous,” Wolves coach Eric Richardson said. “I don’t like to put her in back-to-back events, but I needed to lean on her today and she came through in a big way.”
Tonn and the Xavier distance crew did its best to keep pace with Chandler’s sprinters. Tonn defended her title in the 3,200 and 1,600 runs. She also anchored the Gators’ 3,200 relay win and won the 800.
“I really wanted to defend my titles,” said Tonn, a sophomore who will compete at national junior events in North Carolina in June.
“Getting the 800 was ... I don’t know. My coach said I don’t have to compete for a few weeks, so leave it all on the track.”
Matthews was not alone in helping Chandler win the title. Senior Micsha Carson won the long jump and triple jump. She also took second in the 100 hurdles and was part of the winning 400 relay squad.
Another Carson had a solid day.
Her sister, Hannah, a ninth-grader at Mesa Rhodes Junior High, who competes for Mesa Dobson, won the shot put and discus.
She also placed third in the 100 dash and long jump.
In the 5A-II meet, Phoenix South Mountain easily defended its title with 110 points.
Tempe Marcos de Niza tied for seventh with 32 points and Mesa Desert Ridge finished ninth with 31 points.
The Padres’ 3,200 relay team won the state title with a time of 9:43.69.
Mesa Skyline junior Alexi Stamp finished second in the 200 and third in the 100.

Jessica Tonn did not anchor the 3200 relay. Sarah Penney did and she ran a 2:12 split. Sarah also placed second to Tonn in the 1600 w/ a 4:50.72 split and second to Tonn in the 800 with a 2:14.75 split. She placed fourth in the 3200 in 10:58. Please be more accurate. I agree! Thank you Tribune for providing such great coverage of AZ high school track. While there will always be some errors, the fact that you printed every event winners name was great coverage for our sport. Suggest removal of this commentMay 14, 2008
