Trojan girls continue title streak; twist of fate costs boys

By Jeff Hoodzow, Tribune

The Chandler Valley Christian track team felt both sides of the emotional spectrum Saturday as the girls’ squad won its 13th straight state title and the boys fell one point shy due to another school’s disqualification in the final event of the night.

The boys held a nine-point lead heading into the 1,600-meter relay, and needed Phoenix Northwest Christian to finish outside of first place to lock up their second straight title. The title appeared to belong to the Trojans as Yuma Catholic crossed the finish line just ahead of Northwest Christian.

However, Yuma Catholic was disqualified after it threw the baton across the finish line, giving Northwest Christian (107 points) the title and Valley Christian (106) second place.

Queen Creek Canyon State (103) finished third and Bisbee (43) and Yuma Catholic (40) rounded out the top five.

“These guys gave all that they had,” Northwest Christian coach Patrick Arsenault said.

The loss was even harder as the day before, Yuma Catholic was disqualified from the event because of a uniform violation. The Shamrocks won their appeal and placed back in the event, knocking out Valley Christian, which qualified eighth. If Valley Christian had run in the race, it would have secured at least one point with a last-place finish and no worse than a tie for the state championship.

The Northwest Christian win wasn’t a fluke by any means — the squad took home five events compared with three for Valley Christian.

“You have to give all the credit to Northwest Christian,” Valley Christian coach Dan Kuiper said. “We’ve definitely experienced some highs and lows tonight.”

Also on the boys’ side, two local athletes took home multiple individual state championships. Scottsdale Christian’s Isaiah Klassen won the 1,600 title (4:22.53) on Friday and followed it up with the 3,200 title (9:52.48) on Saturday.

Canyon State’s Gersham Sharp won both hurdles event, posting 15.98 seconds to win the 110 hurdles and 41.02 seconds to take home the 300 crown.

Other individual titles went to Canyon State’s George Jones in the 400 (449.36) and Valley Christian's John Kredit in discus (151 feet).

On the girls’ side, Valley Christian’s dominance continued as expected. The team posted victories in nine events, including all three relays.

“It’s turning into quite a run,” Kuiper said. “None of these girls want to become the first team to come up short.”

Valley Christian finished with 192.5 points with Morenci (78.5) a distant second. Northwest Christian (72), Benson (54) and Phoenix Horizon Honors (45) finished up the top five.

Leading the charge for the Trojans was Breanna Leslie, who won the 100 hurdles (15.04) and the 300 hurdles (46.33), where fellow runners Quinn Robertson and Greer Evans rounded out the top three.

Other individual titles went to Valley Christian’s Shanel Smith, who won the long jump, clearing 18-9.5.
