Apache Junction dominates Agua Fria on ground

By Cary L. Tyler, For the Tribune

Apache Junction quarterback Nate Scola rushed for 109 yards, including three touchdowns, and threw for 81 yards Friday as the Prospectors plowed through visiting Avondale Agua Fria 48-6, avenging a loss to the Owls last year.

Although Scola was part of a 454-yard rushing night that included another 100-yard rushing effort from teammate Mike Taylor and 83 yards from Prospector Terry Eytcheson, the junior said this is only the beginning for 2-0 Apache Junction.

“We’re feeling pretty good, but it is game by game. Each week is going to be tougher and tougher,” Scola said. “There’s always room for improvement.”

Teammate Anthony Burkhardt, who had a big night on defense by pulling down one interception and scooping up an Owl fumble, agreed.

“We’ve got goals, and those goals take us beyond tonight,” Burkhardt said. “They got six points, and that’s not acceptable. We need donuts. We should have got that shutout.”

Agua Fria (0-1) got its only touchdown as a result of a miscue by Apache Junction in the third quarter, when a fumble from Shane McCullen put the Owls on the Prospector 8-yard line for the only time in the game.

The rest of the game was a track meet for Apache Junction, which scored 68 last week in an offense that has quickly become diverse and has taken pressure off McCullen, who was the main rusher for the Prospectors last season.

Although McCullen was held to only 53 yards, he did rip off a 97-yard kickoff return to start the second half to remind everyone why he is headed to Arizona State next season.

“The big thing was the two scores right away to start the second half,” said Apache Junction coach Rich Milligan. “That took the wind out of their sails.”

Milligan was pleased with the team’s multiple offensive threats.

“We’re going to have to be able to do this to beat better teams like Chaparral, Paradise Valley and Saguaro,” Milligan said.
