Saguaro coach John Sanders was not happy after Friday night’s season opener.

SLIDESHOW: Friday night prep football action

The bar is certainly high for the two-time defending 4A-I state champion Sabercats when a 56-0 win on the road against Prescott, a team that went to state a season ago, is not good enough.

It took all of 14 seconds for Saguaro to get on the board, recovering a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and scoring from five yards out on the next snap.

Running back Beau Burton ran it in for the first of his three scores – in the first quarter. He finished with 226 yards on just 11 carries.

The Sabercats dominated in every aspect, opening up holes on offense and running over, around and away from defenders. The passing game was also clicking with quarterback Cole Rarrick.

“We saw some good things, we saw some not so good things,” Sanders said. “It was our first go with our quarterback. That was a huge key for us to try to get him started on the right foot.”

On defense, Sanders’ team was even more impressive, holding Prescott to just 92 yards of total offense – 11 on the ground for a team that runs the Wing-T.

The only negatives were 12 penalties and an ankle injury to star two-way lineman Corey Adams. Sanders hopes he will be back next week.

Bottom line, the Sabercats took care of business and extended their winning streak to 20 as they seek to become the first 4A program to three-peat since Flagstaff won four straight from 1981-84.

“You have to stay focused,” Sanders said. “I’m trying to keep the kids level-headed and let them know that anybody can beat them any day and the target got huge. Last year on the repeat, the target got big. As a three-peat, the target is enormous so these kids know that. The goal is get back to the University of Phoenix. So far we’re on track.”
