Hamilton wins in the dark
By Jeff Simon, For the Tribune
They have proven they can play golf in the daylight. Saturday, Chandler Hamilton’s players showed they can play in the dark as well. With the final two groups finishing well after sunset, Hamilton won the Brophy Grayhawk Invitational.
“Once the ball went up in the air we didn’t know where it was going,” Hamilton senior Andrew Yun said.
On Grayhawk’s Raptor Course, the Huskies were seven shots better than Mesa Red Mountain and finished nine strokes ahead of Glendale Mountain Ridge.
Two of Hamilton’s golfers, Yun and C.J. Kim, played in the final two groups, and their scores were crucial if the defending state champions were going to get the come-from-behind victory.
Mountain Ridge opened the 27-hole tournament on Friday by shooting a team total of even-par 144.
Kim responded by shooting a second-round 73 on Saturday as did Yun, who captured the individual title.
He opened the tournament with a 3-under-par 33 on Friday.
“This shows us we can be in every tournament no matter who we play,’’ Yun said. “This shows our depth.”
Yun’s 27-hole total of 2-under-par 106 was four shots better than Red Mountain’s Riley Kernagis, Phoenix Mountain Pointe’s Mike Anderson, Scottsdale Desert Mountain’s Matt Farraye and Hamilton’s Cameron Palmer. Palmer, just a sophomore, came up big for the Huskies with a final-round 74.
Even though the competitors did play the championship tees, the tournament was played on what will probably be the most difficult golf course the high schools will play this season. It’s one reason it took over five hours for each group to complete play.
“I don’t think anybody played as well as they could today,” Yun said. “I’m happy we were able to grind it out.”
Mountain Ridge played the final round without two of its top performers.
A.J. Vetnar, who had a first-round 34, and Brandon Webster, who had a first-round 36, were not brought back for the final round by the school’s coach.
