Paradise Valley won in a blowout Friday night. But it was close in one sense.

Which of the Trojan units dominated most in a 49-3, non-region football victory over Glendale Sandra Day O’Connor at Paradise Valley?

Was it the offense? Tyree Parker ran for 124 yards in the first half and scored two touchdowns. The Trojans scored 35 points in the second quarter and led 42-0 at halftime of the 4A-I nonregion game. Parker, who carried 11 times , scored on runs of 45 and three yards. He did not carry from scrimmage in the second half.

Was it the defense? Paradise Valley held O’Connor to 11 yards and one first down in the first half. The Eagles did not get the ball past midfield until there was only 11:34 left in the game. A couple late drives allowed O’Connor to finish with 76 yards total offense.

Was it the kicking game? Danny Compton kicked seven extra points. More impressively he had six touchbacks, including on the first five kickoffs of the game, compounding the Eagles’ problems on offense by keeping them bottled up in their own territory.

Coach Don Yantis declined to pick one.

“All the units played well,’’ he said. “It was great all-around team effort. We’ll look at the film. I’m sure we’ll spot some things to work on.”

O’Connor managed to stop Paradise Valley on its first drive. Kevin Spain threw incomplete on fourth down from the 3-yard line.

The Eagles’ lone offensive highlight in the first three quarters came on the next possession when quarterback Danny Matthews scrambled for 14 yards and a first down. O'Connor was forced to punt.

Paradise Valley drove 49 yards and scored with 38 seconds left in the first quarter on a 1 yard run by Jake Brown.

Matthews left the game with a knee injury just before the end of the quarter.

Brown ran 20 yards for a second score with 9:34 left in the half and the route was on.

Parker, a junior who rushed for more than 1,400 yards last season, broke off a 45-yard run for a touchdown 1:20 later.

“He’s a much better back than he was last year,’’ Yantis said. “He’s worked hard athletically and academically. He has 13 games under his belt now.”

Paradise Valley scored three more times before the half.
