Queen Creek’s Joel Hanson had two touchdown receptions and a 55-yard kickoff return to lead his Bulldogs to a 58-7 win over the visiting Flagstaff Eagles in a 4A non-region game.
SLIDESHOW: Friday night high school football
Hanson’s kickoff return, with 7:42 remaining in the contest, came as revenge over a blown chance by Queen Creek (2-0) to record a shut out.
The Eagles (0-3) scored just twelve seconds earlier when a pass from backup quarterback Luke Rotter was batted into the air by the Bulldog defense and fell into Will Jenney’s hands, who then scampered into the end zone.
“We wanted that one, but it was nice to be able to get that run,” Hanson said. “We worked hard to try and shut down Flagstaff’s running game and had shut down their passing game until that catch.”
The game was never in doubt for the Bulldogs, who racked up 37 points in the first half, including a 24-yard pass from Adam Brzeczek to Nikko Ramos.
Brzeczek was one of three Queen Creek quarterbacks to get at least one touchdown pass in the game.
The Bulldog defense picked up three interceptions and a fumble return in the game, while also holding Flagstaff to 33 total yards and two first downs in the first half.
“We hopefully can stay focused and see the big picture,” said Queen Creek coach Curt LeBlanc. “We’ve had good success the first two games. We’re ahead of where we were last year and we’re happy about that.”
The Bulldogs will have their biggest test next week against Apache Junction (3-0), which has crushed its own opponents, including a 56-0 win on Friday.
“It’s probably our most important game of the year,” Hanson said. “They beat us by one last year, and we just want revenge.”
LeBlanc said the game is part of the big picture for the season.
“(Apache Junction) won the game last year but they didn’t beat us, we had a chance but didn’t capitalize, so we know we can compete with them,” LeBlanc said. “We’ve got to stay focus and do what we do and do what we do well. If we do that, we put ourselves in a position.”

Higley Rules
AJ relax a bit. You are a second class football program. Actually win more than 6 games in a year and then get on here and start talking your team up. This will be a good game and will probably come down to turnovers. QC has actually played someone with a win, where the teams you have played have a combined 0 wins. I'm sure QC is very threatened by the notion of playing AJ the football powerhouse. Suggest removal of this commentSeptember 17, 2008
