Fourth-ranked Mesa Skyline capitalized early and often on both offense and defense on its way to a 64-6 win over Phoenix Alhambra in a 5A nonregion game Friday at Mesa.
SLIDESHOW: Friday night high school football
Senior quarterback Anthony Ybarra led the Coyotes (2-0) on offense. Ybarra threw for 117 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
“He’s been doing it for three years now,” Skyline coach Peter Jonovich said. “He knows how to lead, and he knows the offense. He gets better with each play.”
Skyline also got big plays from senior running back Damari Lewis, who rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns, including a 65-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. As a team Skyline rushed for a total of 378 yards.
The Coyotes’ defense smothered Alhambra (0-2), not allowing a score until the Lions’ seventh drive of the game in the second quarter. Senior Lance Hyer came up big on several plays including a sack of Alhambra quarterback Charles Burnham for a loss of 8 yards and a recovered Burnham fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.
Possibly the biggest play for the defense was in the first quarter with the Coyotes leading 6-0. On the first play after the Lions recovered a Skyline fumble, the Coyotes’ defense forced and recovered a fumble.
Four plays later, Ybarra rushed for a 6-yard touchdown to put Skyline up 14-0 after the 2-point conversion.
