Since all streaks must come to an end, this impressive run by Chandler Valley Christian against big-time rival Phoenix Christian wasn’t going to tilt in its favor forever.

But many chances were missed and mistakes happened at particularly crucial times, and that’s why Valley Christian’s four-year winning streak in the rivalry was extinguished in a 14-6 loss Friday night at Benson Field.
This frustration hadn’t been felt in awhile. The Trojans hadn’t lost to Phoenix Christian since 2004.
Beyond that, the Trojans hadn’t lost at home since 2003.
“It’s a game we should have won,” Trojans coach Bill Morgan said between reiterations of how six penalties and three turnovers were nails in this night’s proverbial coffin.
A late comeback by Valley Christian (1-1) almost salvaged the night. Trailing 14-0 early in the fourth quarter, the Trojans were finally able to run the ball as they have for most of the past few years.
Among their variety of options, Brock Longanecker hadn’t been used much as a ball carrier through three quarters, but the skinny 6-footer had 22 yards on his first three carries. Then Blake Argo had a 21-yard scamper to the goal line.
Shaken up on the play, Argo was attended to for a few minutes, eventually walked off under his own power, then returned a play later and scored the Trojans’ lone touchdown to make it 14-6. A high snap on the extra point contributed to the kick bouncing off the left upright.
After being picked apart for the first 1 1/2 quarters by Cougars quarterback Nate De Santiago, Valley Christian’s defense was stout the rest of the night, and James Fitzgerald’s second interception of the night gave the ball back to the Trojans.
Again, Valley Christian moved the ball down the short field, but a penalty negated Jordan Morgan’s quarterback keeper for a touchdown, and two plays later Morgan was intercepted by Phoenix Christian’s Julian Wilson.
“Plays like that haunt you,” Morgan said.
Again, Valley Christian’s defense held and the Trojans got the ball back with three minutes to play.
Again, they drove the length of the field with a grinding running game and a key pass from Morgan to Longanecker, but were stuffed on a fourth-and-3 at the Cougars’ 5-yard line.
Ninety seconds later, the Cougars stormed the field in celebration.
“This was huge, huge for us,” Phoenix Christian coach Bob Denson said. “When our defense had to have them, they came up big.”
In addition to turnovers. Valley Christian recovered two of its own fumbles and had 56 yards in penalties.
Still, the Trojans believe it’s not the end of the world. With the likes of Tombstone, Yuma Catholic, Scottsdale Christian and Northwest Christian upcoming, a younger than usual Trojans team was likely going to take some punishment.
