Tempe Corona del Sol found little resistance from visiting Tucson High School in rolling to a 50-8 nonregion win Friday in a class 5A football game. The third-ranked Aztecs (3-0) turned the ball over on their first two possessions but then scored on their next four to open a 27-0 halftime lead.

Junior Michael Lange led Corona’s offense with three first-half scores. He finished the game with 122 yards on 23 carries and only rushed twice for 5 yards in the second half.
The Aztecs didn’t allow a first down until the third quarter, and their defense scored twice in the second half. Derek Maisel recorded a safety with a tackle in the end zone, and lineman Kyle Winstead returned a fumble 46 yards for Corona’s final score.
The hosts totaled 205 yards rushing in the first half on 31 attempts. The Aztecs finished the game with 266 rushing yards on 45 carries.
The margin of victory could have been more, but an interception at the goal line and a fumble inside Tucson territory ended Corona’s first two possessions.
Tucson (0-2) gained only 138 yards on the night, with 42 coming on its only scoring play. Quarterback Peter Borquez hit William Griffin on the touchdown play, but only after a Corona defender had the ball bounce off his hands and into Griffin’s at the Corona 15-yard line.
Maisel began Corona’s scoring with a 1-yard run in the final minute of the first quarter. Lange then took over, scoring on each of the Aztecs’ next three possessions. He scored on runs of 3, 11 and 1 yard. The final touchdown was set up by a 25-yard fumble return by Tyler Giannonatti.
