Queen Creek Canyon State Academy defeated visiting Phoenix Westwind, 36-14, in a 2A non-region game Friday at Canyon State.
SLIDESHOW: Friday night high school football
The Rams used a stifling defensive effort and balanced rushing attack to cruise to victory. The Warriors tied the game early at eight, however a 59-yard
touchdown pass by Devonne Ross on Canyon State’s following drive gave the Rams the lead, which they never relinquished.
Defense was also key for Canyon State, as the Rams did not allow an offensive touchdown to the Warriors until there was 16 seconds left in the game when
Alex Dishmon completed a 23-yard pass to Devin Grossman.
Westwind's offensive line faced constant pressure, and the Rams were able to hold the Warriors to just 4 of 19 passing, and 188 total yards.
On offense, the Rams controlled the clock throughout the game, and spread the ball out to several different playmakers, as four different players rushed for
touchdowns, and combined for 239 yards on the ground.
Early in the fourth quarter, Canyon State was able to put together a 14-play, 83-yard scoring drive to stifle any chance of a comeback. The Rams ran the ball
14 times on the drive, capping it with a 3-yard touchdown run by Shantamar Young
