Scottsdale Coronado got off to a fast start Friday night in its 53-7 blowout over Phoenix Cortez in Scottsdale.

SLIDESHOW: Friday night high school football

Kaylin Ashley didn’t waste any time getting the Dons on the scoreboard as he returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.

Ashley added another touchdown in the first half, a 49-yard run, and Jario Ibarra matched him with two TDs in the opening two quarters to get the Dons off and running.

Sergio Arocha added back-to-back touchdowns for Coronado, increasing the Dons’ lead to 47-0 in the third quarter.

“I was expecting it to be a much closer game,” Coronado coach B.J. Pasquel said. “[Cortez is] a pretty good team and we came out and our defense set the tone. I don’t think they had a first down at halftime.”

Pasquel said he wants his team to work on limiting penalties. Coronado had nine penalties for 110 yards.

“There were too many penalties … we don’t play that way, so we’ll work on that,” he said.

Cortez finally broke the shutout in the fourth quarter when Charlie Shoemaker scored on a 2-yard run.

Coronado had 305 total yards, while limiting Cortez to 35.

“It’s a great start at home…it’s a step in the right direction,” Pasquel said.

Coronado will hit the road next Friday (7 p.m.) to face 4A opponent Phoenix Greenway.
