Highland boys win Chandler cross-country tourney

By John Mahnke, For the Tribune

Unfortunately for Taylor Cole, she didn't have many teammates to run with Saturday morning. It didn't seem to slow the Chandler Hamilton junior as she won her race at the Chandler Invitational held at Tumbleweed Park.

Cole covered the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 36 seconds, easily pacing the junior class field by 34 seconds.

"I wanted to be under 19 minutes and I was hoping to win," Cole said. "It was nice to get both."

The Huskies only have three juniors on this year's team and no seniors so they did not figure into the final team standings. Each school's top finisher in the four boys and girls races were scored for the overall standings.

Gilbert Highland's boys team, paced by sophomore Cory Breinholt's runner-up finish, won its team title with 17 points. Phoenix Shadow Mountain placed second with 25 points.

On the girls side, Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge (29) edged Marana Mountain View (30) for first place. Phoenix Desert Vista tied Casa Grande for third place with 43 points.

"It's very early yet, but does give us a little energy boost," Highland boys coach Dave Montgomery said. "We'll have some more confidence. We need to keep plugging away."

Mesa Dobson senior Carlos Martinez entered the meet not sure what to expect considering he was not at 100 percent healthwise. But he posted a 15:25 to finish second to Shadow Mountain's Cody Smith (15:17).

"He's a great runner. He got me here last year, too," Martinez said. "I had a sore throat this morning and was tired from marching band. But to place second ... I'll take that."

Breinholt was also happy with his performance, which came in the day's best race.

He finished second to Tuba City's Billy Orman by less than a second. Both runners officially finished at 15:54, with Orman crossing the line a couple of strides in front.

"I was hoping for first, but my time was good," Breinholt said. "Our team had a strong day, so that's important."

In the freshman girls race, Gilbert Perry's Taylor DeLaVeaga took top honors in 19:30. Highland's Manuel Aguilar placed second in the boys race (16:56).
