Prep notebook: Mountain View wins Mesa Relays
By Al Bravo, Tribune
The Mesa Mountain View boys and girls grabbed top honors at the annual Mesa Relays swim meet at Carson Junior High pool over the weekend.
The Toros won the divers’ relay, the girls 200 freestyle relay, the boys 200 breaststroke relay and the coed 200 freestyle relay.
Mesa Dobson and Mesa Red Mountain finished second and third in the 14-team event, which included several East Valley schools as well as Cottonwood Mingus and Phoenix North.
GILBERT
Gilbert football coach Jesse Parker was impressed with Tucson Salpointe, but felt his Tigers lacked the spark and intensity of previous weeks in a loss Friday in Tucson.
“Any time you beat a team that’s good or ranked high, that can be a recipe for not doing well the next week,” Parker said. “We thought we were better than we were after (Phoenix) Desert Vista.
“It’s a game we could have won and probably should have won. Our season has been quite a tale so far.”
With tight end Beau Harris out for the year, Gilbert has found a backup to fill in.
Sophomore quarterback Nathaniel Causey took over at tight end for Harris last week, and also played some middle linebacker.
“He’s still our backup quarterback, but we need him in other positions right now,” Parker said.
Starting quarterback Brandon Bialkowski had a productive game on the ground with 78 yards rushing, but was just 3-for-13 passing in the Tigers’ 20-17 loss.
MESA RED MOUNTAIN
A week after returning a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns, Red Mountain decided to move Derek Molina into the offensive backfield. Molina responded with 14 carries for 89 yards in the Mountain Lions’ 24-6 win over Phoenix North Canyon.
“We decided after that first week we needed to get him the ball,” Red Mountain coach Jim Jones said.
The Mountain Lions haven’t abandoned their platoon system, but now have five or six players at least seeing part-time duty on both sides of the ball after the first week. They are Molina (defensive back), Brett Cerqua (fullback and linebacker), Julian Madison (flanker and safety), Jake Phipps (defensive and offensive line), Mark Jarrett (safety and wide receiver) and Lucian Mariano (inside linebacker and offensive line). Madison, who played only defense in Week 1, hauled in a 70-yard TD pass against North Canyon.
CHANDLER HAMILTON
Hamilton receiver Drew Terrell chose Stanford over Arizona State on Saturday.
Terrell has 12 catches for 106 yards and seven carries for 46 yards in three games. He led Hamilton last year with 47 catches for 786 yards and seven touchdowns.
HONORS
Scottsdale Chaparral quarterback Spencer Stone was selected the Scottsdale Quarterback Club’s offensive player of the week after completing 14-of-23 passes for 322 yards and four touchdowns Friday against Prescott.
Scottsdale Coronado defensive end Sergio Arocha had eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery in a win over Phoenix Cortez to earn defensive honors.
