Football notes: Chaparral's Roh chooses Michigan

By Kyle Odegard, Tribune

Scottsdale Chaparral defensive end Craig Roh has committed to attend Michigan next season.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder had 99 tackles last year and 15 sacks. Roh has 32 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks through three games this season.

He had scholarship offers from 35 teams, a number that skyrocketed during the summer after an impressive showing at camps.

Roh’s dad, Fred, played college football in Michigan and the family has relatives in the state.

Roh, the third highest rated prospect in Arizona according to recruiting sites, had narrowed his list down to Michigan, Arizona State, USC, UCLA and Nebraska in August.

Phoenix Desert Vista’s Devon Kennard is the top Arizona recruit and top-5 nationally, while Scottsdale Saguaro defensive lineman Corey Adams is the state’s second-rated recruit.

Neither have committed to a college, but both basically have their pick of where they would like to attend.

ST. MARY'S

One odd step cost Phoenix St. Mary’s a big part of its team for the near future.

Senior receiver/defensive back/returner Jacob Santa Cruz injured his knee following a touchdown reception against Mesa Mountain View Sept. 12, and Knights coach Eddy Zubey said he’ll miss at least a month.

An MRI is scheduled for Sept. 19 to determine the severity of the damage. If tests reveal a hyperextension, Santa Cruz could miss four to six weeks. If there’s ligament damage he could miss the rest of the season.

In the second quarter of a 51-14 loss to the Toros, Santa Cruz ran a streak pattern and caught the ball in the back of the end zone. As he slowed up, his foot landed awkwardly, halfway on the grass and halfway on the track which surrounds the field.

Santa Cruz was on crutches with a knee brace this week. Without him, the Knights will have to go by committee at a couple receiver spots and find someone to return punts and kickoffs.

“Depth is not our strong suit, and losing him long-term would turn us from paper thin to Kleenex-thin,” Zubey said.

NOTRE DAME

After going into the season planning to utilize a two-quarterback system, Scottdale Notre Dame coach Scot Bemis said this week he has decided senior Shane Wolfe will be the full-time starter.

“Shane has really separated himself,” Bemis said. “He’s done a good job making the reads he needs to make. Hopefully that will continue to improve, and we’ll give him more responsibility.”

Wolfe, who split time with junior Will King in the first two games, has completed 14 of 23 attempts for 297 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

“He’s not forcing things and that’s what I’ve been preaching to him all spring and summer,” Bemis said.

MESQUITE

Gilbert Mesquite coach Mike Reardon likes to employ a two-quarterback system. Trouble is, both quarterbacks need to be healthy at the same time for that to happen.

Senior Matt Westergard, who figured to open the season as the lead quarterback, missed the first two games with a high ankle sprain. In his stead, junior Steven Hansen has run the Wildcats and leads them in rushing and scoring.

But it appears it’s Hansen’s turn to watch this week. He suffered a knee injury last week against Mesa Westwood and doesn’t figure to play. Westergard, however, is ready to return and will start.

Dobson won’t have the services of leading rusher Terrance Martin (239 yards in three games) this week against Chandler Hamilton after he suffered an ankle sprain last week at Chandler.

Place kicker and punter César Vallejo filled in in the second half at tailback. Vallejo rushed for 43 yards on eight attempts and scored a touchdown with mostly fourth-quarter reps.

Chandler Seton Catholic quarterback Justin Sieczkowski was named the Arizona Cardinals High School Player of the Week after throwing for 362 yards and four touchdowns in the Sentinels’ 42-16 victory over Flagstaff Sinagua.
