Stib leads Pinnacle past Goldwater

By Chris Piel, For the Tribune

Taylor Stib hoisted the Pinnacle Pioneers on his shoulders and ran them to a 47-10 victory against host Phoenix Goldwater on Friday.

SLIDESHOW: Friday Night High School Football

The senior averaged 9.63 yards per carry in his 183 yard, three-touchdown performance.

Stib had four runs for more than 15 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown run to seal the Bulldogs’ coffin early in the fourth quarter.

Perhaps Stib has his offensive line to thank because as a team, the Pioneers rushed 32 times for 278 yards and five touchdowns.

The Bulldogs also had a good day on the ground, especially when they committed to the run in the second half.

Bobby Calvin got 20 of the team’s 37 carries for 137 yards.

Pioneer quarterback Alex Cappellini also threw for a touchdown and 152 yards on 15 attempts.

Forty-eight of those yards came on a bomb to receiver Michael Tommasino, who was tackled on the 1-yard line and then caught a touchdown pass a few plays later.

Bulldogs quarterback Joey Raimo struggled under constant and heavy pressure from the Pioneers’ defense. He completed 5 of 13 passes for 32 yards and a 19-yard touchdown pass.

The Bulldog’s gained only 77 yards and four first downs in the first half before finding their rhythm in the second.

The Bulldogs dominated the fourth quarter with a drive of 7 minutes, 21 seconds, that amassed six first downs and 77 yards. But once inside the red zone, they failed to score as the Pinnacle defense stiffened.
