As high school football games go, this one was about as predictable as any.
SLIDESHOW: Friday Night High School Football
One very good team, Mesa Mountain View, and one very poor team, Glendale Ironwood. The Toros stayed perfect this season recording a 56-0 road victory Friday night.
By the end of the first quarter the Eagles (0-3) were playing like they weren’t real interested and that made things super easy for Mountain View (3-0).
Ironwood came into the game having been beaten soundly by Chandler and by Tempe Marcos de Niza to open the season. The Eagles defense has given up at least 43 points in each of its first three games.
The Toros had been the opposite, beating Gilbert Highland rather soundly to open the season and then trouncing Phoenix St. Mary’s last week.
Mountain View quarterback Blake Decker threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more and has led the Toros offense to 50 points or more in two of the first three games of the season.
Decker completed 10-of-17 passes for 179 yards and the two touchdowns.
Mountain View scored on its second play of the game when Decker threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Daniel Diaz. It was 15-0 before the first quarter ended after Jacom Brimhall rushed 19 yards for another touchdown.
“The first half we played really well,’’ Toros coach Tom Joseph said. “If we can eliminate the five or six mental mistakes we make each game we’ll be OK.”
The Toros’ endless supply of running backs broke tackles and found huge holes as they combined to rush for 260 yards against the Eagles defense.
The Toros defense earned its second shutout of the season.
“They fly to the football,’’ Joseph said of his defense. “They’re a fun bunch to watch.”
Leading 42-0 at the half, Mountain View added two more scores in the second half with the officials using a running clock.
