 Mesa Skyline dominated visiting Phoenix Carl Hayden Friday night, 59-0, in a 5A-II nonregion contest.

Skyline (3-1) dominated from the outset, cruising to a 38-0 halftime lead. The Coyotes compiled 432 rushing yards, while holding Carl Hayden (0-4) to 74 total yards and handing the Falcons their 58th consecutive loss.

Senior running back Thomas Brown led the Skyline attack with 197 yards on only five carries, all of which came in the game’s first 15 minutes. He scored on runs of 10 and 86 yards on Skyline’s first two possessions. Through four games, Brown has rushed for 429 yards on 22 carries, giving him an average of 19.5 yards per carry.

Fellow seniors Damari Lewis and Matt Ditsworth also scored two touchdowns apiece for Skyline.

The Coyotes players and coaches were was eager to get back on the field after dropping a contest to Mountain Ridge the prior week.

“We weren’t very happy with the way we played the week before, and I know our kids wanted to build a big lead early in the game,” Skyline head coach Pete Jonovich said. “It was nice to get that lead because we were able to get some younger kids valuable playing experience.”

Regular starting quarterback Anthony Ybarra was resting a minor injury and did not play. Receiver Mike Bailey started at quarterback in Ybarra’s place, while freshman Chad Leonard played the final two-plus quarters.

Bailey accounted for two first-half touchdowns, the first a 24-yard pass to Darnari Lewis that gave Skyline a 21-0 lead and the second a 4-yard run on the following possession.

Leonard scored late in the game on a 6-yard keeper.
