A lousy start ended with a perfect finish for Glendale Mountain Ridge.

Mountain Lions quarterback Kevin Yost completed his final 11 passing attempts, two of which went for touchdowns in leading Mountain Ridge to a 35-31 victory over visiting Phoenix Pinnacle.

Yost was 22-for-32 for 282 yards and four touchdowns. He did not have an interception. All that after an 0-for-3 start to the game.

Pinnacle looked like they were going to roll early as the Pioneers led 17-0 in the first quarter. Led by running back Taylor Stib and quarterback Alex Cappellini, Pinnacle scored the first three times it touched the football. Stib caught a 5-yard scoring pass from Cappellini and then had a 5-yard rushing touchdown.

Stib was sensational on the night, gaining 171 yards on 19 carries, including a 65-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

The Pioneers led 17-7 at the break, but at halftime, Mountain Ridge decided to get serious about throwing the ball and there was nothing Pinnacle could do about it.

Yost found Cody Wollschlager open the entire second half. The senior wide receiver, who had a 17-yard touchdown reception in the first half, caught 12 passes for 158 yards and two more touchdowns in the second half. Pinnacle’s defense failed to adjust to how Wollschlager got open. There were no double teams.

Late in the third quarter, a 17-yard touchdown pass from Yost to Travis Hutchinson cut the lead to 24-21. The Lions then took the lead for the first time early in the fourth when Yost hit Wollschlager with a 14-yard scoring pass.

Pinnacle responded with a 12-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Stib. It gave the Pioneers the lead back at 31-28 with 3:28 to play.

With just less than one minute to play, Mountain Ridge’s Brett Hager scored on a 1-yard run to give the Lions the lead for good.
