For six weeks, Donaven Anderson had been hampered by an ankle injury. But today, he and his Scottsdale Horizon teammates feel good as new.

It took awhile, but the Huskies finally capitalized on a series of crucial injuries to Phoenix Mountain Pointe, as Anderson’s game-winning touchdown catch with four minutes left was enough to put Horizon (1-3) in the win column this season with a 17-10 victory at Mountain Pointe.

Anderson originally hurt his ankle in August, and was hobbled through most of training camp. Huskies coach Steve Casey thought he was close to full strength, but after six receptions, 53 yards and the game-deciding score on a 15-yard catch-and-run, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound tight end is back for good.

And feeling good.

“The kids finally know what a win feels like,” Casey said while his players sang the school’s fight song along the visiting sidelines.

The Pride only felt pain. Mountain Pointe (1-3) started to assert itself offensively behind diminutive tailback De’andre Currie. Fast, agile and difficult to tackle at 5-foot-6, Currie ran for 141 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown before halftime, but things quickly got ugly for the Pride.

Following a 9-yard gain late in the second quarter, Currie was tackled just shy of Horizon’s goal line and had his ankle twisted around. He had to be helped off the field and couldn’t return. The Pride wound up kicking a field goal.

It gets worse. On the next series (the last before halftime), quarterback Austin Lahr injured his left hand while being sacked. He never returned.

Then with a 10-9 lead at intermission, the Pride lost starting linebacker Ryan Noble when he suffered a severe leg injury during the second-half kickoff. The defense continued to play well in the second half, but without Currie and Lahr, the Pride wound up punting on every second-half offensive series.

Finally, receiver/defensive back Will Claye was ejected from the game for a personal foul while Horizon took a knee to end the game, meaning he must miss next week’s game at Chandler Hamilton.

“It was no fun,” Pride coach Phil Abbadessa said.

Despite a rash of penalties and fumbles, big plays were made by both sides. Eric Stevens hauled in a 43-yard pass from Stanford in the second quarter for Horizon’s first touchdown, which was preceded by a 73-yard run by Currie to set up his touchdown plunge.

A 43-yard completion from Stanford to Cru Casey set up Anderson’s touchdown catch, then Stanford and Casey connected again for the 2-point conversion.

Anderson was supposed to play defense as well, but the ankle problem has shelved that for now.

“He wasn’t going to be denied tonight,” Casey said. “Last week was the first time he felt himself again. He was again this week.”
