Mtn. View QB Decker out 2-3 weeks with ankle injury

By Les Willsey, Tribune

For the second year in a row, Mesa Mountain View’s starting quarterback has been felled by an injury, but the injury doesn’t appear to be long term.

Senior quarterback Blake Decker suffered a high-ankle sprain in the second period of last week’s 22-17 win over Phoenix Brophy at Phoenix College. Toros coach Tom Joseph said initial X-rays showed no break. Joseph estimates Decker will miss two to three weeks.

Decker was thrust into the starting role the final five games of last season when starter Alex Harris suffered a broken leg in Game 7 of the season. Decker has thrown eight touchdown passes and two interceptions in 3-plus games.

Junior Brad Heap took over Friday for Decker and performed well after a shaky start. Heap passed for a score and ran for one in two-plus quarters of action.

“Considering the situation, Brad did a very nice job,” Joseph said. “We’ll see how Blake’s injury progresses. Brad will step in in the meantime.”

Mountain View plays host to Glendale Deer Valley this week and opens region play the following week at Mesa.

APACHE JUNCTION

Apache Junction’s top two offensive weapons, quarterback Nate Scola (ankle) and running back Shane McCullen (knee), both missed a portion of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter on Friday against Scottsdale Chaparral.

Both should be back this week against Glendale Independence, but because the game does not count toward power point standings neither will see significant action, coach Rich Milligan said.

CHANDLER

Chandler’s football program, the longest running of the current four in the district, can notch win No. 400 in school history Friday if the Wolves knock off Yuma High in Yuma. Chandler’s overall record is 399-401-25.

WEEKLY HONORS

Phoenix Arcadia running back Jake Hirschi has been named the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Player of the Week after catching three balls for 132 and three touchdowns and carrying the ball six times for 79 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-0 win over Goodyear Desert Edge on Friday.

Defensive honors went to Desert Mountain defensive end Charlie Andrews, who had six tackles and 1 1/2 sacks in a 44-0 shutout of Phoenix Central.
