Capsules for Friday's prep football games

By Les Willsey, Tribune

5A-I

Brophy (2-3) at Mesa (2-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 1630 E. Southern Ave., Mesa

Key matchup: Both offenses. Brophy has struggled most of the season in trying to establish a new quarterback and all-new personnel, while the Jackrabbits have been inconsistent.

Key stat: Mesa has an 82-13 scoring advantage in two wins, 63-7 in two losses.

The intrigue: Mesa has used two quarterbacks in two games, each with essentially the same result. Each is 1-1 as a starter.

Desert Mountain (2-2) at Camelback (0-4)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 4612 N. 28th St., Phoenix

Key matchup: This could be Desert Mountain’s best chance to run the ball this season. It hasn’t been the team’s forte, but Camelback has allowed 200 rushing yards or more in every game this season.

Key stat: Kevin Radcliffe has seven touchdowns and one interception this season.

The intrigue: This is a must-win for the Wolves, since it’s also the last reasonably easy game with Red Mountain, Desert Ridge and Desert Valley Region play to follow.

North (1-3) at St. Mary’s (2-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 1201 W. Thomas Road (Phoenix College)

Key matchup: St. Mary’s RB R.J. McGill has size and speed and if he gets a crack by his blocking up front, North is going to get winded quickly trying to tackle him.

Key stat: The Knights’ 49 points last year against North were the most by a Knights team since mid-2005.

The intrigue: North has been hammered by Centennial and Mesa Mountain View. No shame in that, but the Knights have owned North in recent years, and have some angst to take out on someone else after losing to Gilbert.

César Chavez (2-2) at Red Mountain (2-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 7301 E. Brown Road, Mesa

Key matchup: Red Mountain offense vs. Chazez defense. Red Mountain needs more than one drive a game to help its struggling defense.

Key stat: Red Mountain’s defense continues to give up yardage, allowing 560 to Hamilton last week.

The intrigue: Both teams attempt to reach the season’s mid-point above .500.

Deer Valley (2-2) at Mountain View (4-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 2700 E. Brown Road, Mesa

Key matchup: Mountain View’s offense (averaging 39 points a game) vs. the Deer Valley defense, which has given up 30 points a game.

Key stat: Mountain View quarterback Brad Heap’s first meaningful appearance resulted in 128 yards passing (10-of-18, one TD) in slightly more than a half last week in relief on injured Blake Decker.

The intrigue: Mountain View wants to avoid “trap’ week that could play into Skyhawks hands with Toros win over Brophy last week and potential distraction this evening of homecoming.

Gilbert (4-1) at Horizon (1-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 5601 E. Greenway Road, Scottsdale

Key matchup: Gilbert’s running game has been a steady force all season, something Horizon must neutralize to make this a game.

Key stat: Tigers put up 356 yards on offense last week that resulted in 48 points.

The intrigue: Gilbert hopes to be able to play a lot of players this week and stay fresh for the beginning of region play next week with Hamilton.

Chandler (3-1) at Yuma (2-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 400 S. 6th Ave., Yuma

Key matchup: Both teams run the spread, but Chandler has more potent weapons.

Key stat: Running back Jamil Hines gave the Wolves a rushing presence with his second 100-run effort (120 on 17 carries) last week.

The intrigue: How the Wolves respond to fall break and their longest road trip of the season.

Mountain Pointe (1-3) at Hamilton (4-1)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 3700 S. Arizona Ave., Chandler

Key matchup: About the only way Mountain Pointe can contend is to try and keep the ball away from Hamilton and keep turnovers down, but that likely won’t be enough.

Key stat: Four Hamilton backs have rushed for 146 yards or more and seem to be fresher because of it.

The intrigue: Not much. The Huskies were heavy favorites even before Mountain Pointe lost three of its starters, plus receiver/defensive back Will Claye to a one-game suspension during last week’s loss to Horizon.

Mesquite (1-3) at Basha (3-1)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 5990 S. Val Vista Drive, Chandler

Key matchup: Mesquite’s front seven must repel Basha’s interest in pounding the ball on the ground, and force quarterback Michael Benjamin to beat them with the passing game.

Key stat: Last season’s 18-15 win against Basha is Mesquite’s only victory against a Central Region team since 2005.

The intrigue: Mesquite’s tough schedule is again yielding close games, but more losses than hoped. This is another in that series and the Wildcats need a breakthrough.

Trevor Browne (2-3) at Corona del Sol (5-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 4201 E. Knox Road, Tempe

Key matchup: Trevor Browne allowed 235 rushing yards to La Joya Community last week, and Michael Lange and the Aztecs running game plan to do the same.

Key stat: The Aztecs have won 14 of their last 15 games.

The intrigue: It should become 15 of 16, but the Aztecs must be careful about not looking ahead to next week’s bye. They can rest physically and mentally starting Saturday.

Goldwater (0-4) at Dobson (2-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 1501 W. Guadalupe Road, Mesa

Key matchup: Dobson’s ground game is seemingly all it needs against west-side foes who struggle to stop it.

Key stat: Dobson’s wins have come against teams with a combined 1-7 record and its losses to teams a combined 12-2.

The intrigue: Can Goldwater put up a fight after four blowout losses?

Westwood (1-4) at Marcos de Niza (4-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 6000 S. Lakeshore Drive, Tempe

Key matchup: Westwood’s offense must at least move the sticks more often and keep the defense off the field. That’s a tough assignment with Marcos playing good defense.

Key stat: Westwood’s opponents to date, including Marcos, have a record of 16-9.

The intrigue: It is important for Marcos de Niza not to look past this game with the region opener against Phoenix Pinnacle looming. Westwood is still a 5A-I school.

5A-II

Pinnacle (2-2) at Kofa (2-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 3100 S. Ave. A, Yuma

Key matchup: The Pinnacle ground game was at its best last Friday, running for 241 yards in 30 carries. Kofa gave up 211 yards on the ground last week in a blowout loss to Gilbert Highland.

Key stat: The Pioneers gave up four more points last week than in their previous three games combined.

The intrigue: With two losses already, the Pioneers can’t afford any slips against lower tier teams before region play gets started.

Maryvale (0-4) at Desert Ridge (2-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 10045 E. Madero Ave., Mesa

Key matchup: The Desert Ridge passing game has been firing on all cylinders the past two weeks and Maryvale has the unenviable task of trying to slow it down.

Key stat: Chris Heldore had a school-record 97-yard interception return for a touchdown last week in a win over Peoria Sunrise Mountain.

The intrigue: The Jaguars will fatten up in this game before starting the region schedule next week in an important game against Mesa Skyline.

Skyline (3-1) at San Luis (1-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 1250 N. Eighth Ave., San Luis

Key matchup: Running backs Tommy Brown and Damari Lewis should again pack a 1-2 punch that will be hard for San Luis to control.

Key stat: Skyline’s nonregion foes are a combined 6-19 this season. Mountain Ridge, the team that beat the Coyotes, has half of those wins.

The intrigue: The Coyotes haven’t had many tough tests, and this looks like another pretty easy win.

4A-I

Apache Junction (4-1) at Independence (0-4)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 6602 N. 75th Ave, Glendale

Key matchup: Apache Junction versus the scoreboard clock. The Prospectors want to build a lead quickly to rest their starters.

Key stat: Shane McCullen has just 16 carries for 26 yards in his past two games.

The intrigue: The Prospectors shouldn’t have much trouble with Independence, and will use this as a pseudo bye week to prepare for the stretch run of region play.

McClintock (3-1) at Chaparral (5-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 6935 E. Gold Dust Ave., Scottsdale

Key matchup: Even without starting running back Anthony Shivers (ankle), the Chargers piled up the yards on the ground against a Tucson Canyon del Oro squad that takes pride in its defense. If the Firebirds slow down the McClintock running game they will be in good shape.

Key stat: Chaparral running back Dwayne Garrett had 18 carries for 218 yards and three touchdowns last week. The Firebirds probably have the most balanced offense in the state.

The intrigue: After spotting Canyon del Oro 21 points, the Chargers hung tough last week. If McClintock can eliminate mistakes this game could stay close.

4A-II

No. 1 Notre Dame (4-0) at Washington (2-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 2217 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix

Key matchup: Washington’s pass-happy offense, which throws nearly 60 percent of the time, faces a defense which limited Chandler Seton Catholic, another pass-happy team, to 154 passing yards last week.

Key stat: The Saints have allowed only 21 points all season. The Rams are giving up an average of 27 per game.

The intrigue: Notre Dame, which is playing its first road game of the year, has never beaten Washington. Is this the year the drought finally ends?

No. 3 Queen Creek (3-1) at Tempe (3-1)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 1730 S. Mill Ave., Tempe

Key matchup: Queen Creek has the advantage in size and strength, so Tempe will have to use its speed and play a smart, mistake-free game to stay in contention.

Key stat: Queen Creek is 3-0 against Tempe since joining the East Sky.

The intrigue: Tempe is off to a surprising start. Can the Buffaloes continue their early-season success and pull off the upset?

Glendale (1-3) at No. 4 Coronado (4-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 2501 N. 74th St., Scottsdale

Key matchup: Glendale’s strength is its line. If the Dons can win the battles up front, this game should be decided quickly.

Key stat: Glendale scored 17 points against Glendale Kellis in its season opener. Coronado put up 41 on Kellis last week.

The intrigue: Can the Dons complete an undefeated run through their nonregion schedule?

Thunderbird (2-2) at No. 5 Arcadia (4-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 4703 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix

Key matchup: This game will likely come down to quarterback play. Arcadia’s Colby Kirkegaard has found a grove the past two weeks (21 of 29, 269 yards, 5 TDs). Thunderbird will try to keep the Titans off balance by switching between Clay Thorenson (dual threat) and Josh Ganados (pure passer).

Key stat: Six players have scored at least two touchdowns for the Titans.

The intrigue: What will running back Jake Hirschi do for an encore after his 5 TD game last week?

Moon Valley (3-1) at Higley (2-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 4068 E. Pecos Road, Gilbert

Key matchup: Moon Valley’s offense thrives on the big play. Six of its 11 touchdowns have come on plays of 28 yards or more. If Higley can force the Rockets into a grind-it-out game, the final score should favor the Knights.

Key stat: After scoring just 14 points in each of their first two games, the Knights have averaged 41.5 points in their last two.

The intrigue: After losing to Tempe in Week 2, Moon Valley has allowed no points in its past two games. Can the Knights end the Rockets’ shutout streak before halftime?

Desert Edge (0-4) at Seton Catholic (4-1)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: Mesa Community College, 1833 W Southern Ave.

Key matchup: Desert Edge doesn’t appear to have any answer for Seton’s spread offense. If the Sentinels defense can contain the Scorpions’ run game, which is averaging 196 yards, this contest will be a blowout.

Key stat: Three of Desert Edge’s losses have been by at least 38 points.

The intrigue: How will the Sentinels respond after getting blown out last week by the No. 1 team in the state?

Perry (5-0) at Williams Field (2-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 2076 South Higley Road, Gilbert

Key matchup: Both teams are missing multiple starters due to injury and are fairly evenly matched, so this game will likely come down to ball control.

Key stat: The three varsity opponents Perry has faced so far are a combined 7-7. The three Williams Field has played are 14-1.

The intrigue: These schools came into existence the same year and are separated by only six miles. With Perry expected to move up to 5A next year and Williams Field likely to remain in 4A, whichever team wins this game will have bragging rights for some time.

2A

Scottsdale Christian (4-0) at Canyon State (2-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 20061 Rittenhouse Road, Queen Creek

Key matchup: Scottsdale Christian’s M.O. is running the ball, while Canyon State started the season strong defensively, but has had a difficult time winning the line of scrimmage the past two games against bigger schools.

Key stat: The Eagles average 10 yards per rush.

The intrigue: The Eagles have picked up where they left off before last season’s playoff game. Can the good times roll one more time before a big showdown with undefeated Northwest Christian next week?

Valley Christian (2-2) at Camp Verde (3-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 1326 Montezuma Castle Road, Camp Verde

Key matchup: Can Valley Christian’s defense adjust from one extreme to another. A week after they tried to slow high-flying, spread-’em-out Yuma Catholic and its passing game (with mixed results), the Trojans go back to facing a more conventional run-first Camp Verde team.

Key stat: Camp Verde has lost its last two games (Blue Ridge and Snowflake) by an identical 35-7 score.

The intrigue: This young V.C. squad is much different than the one which beat Camp Verde twice last season, but they ran for 280 yards twice on Verde, and they’d like to do it again to move past the misery of one bad quarter against Yuma Catholic.

1A

Gila Bend (2-3) at Tempe Prep (5-0)

Time: 7 p.m. Saturday

Address: Arizona Lutheran Academy, 6036 S. 27th Ave., Phoenix

Key matchup: Gila Bend’s defensive backs will have to be ready to stop the run as well. Tempe Prep had three scoring runs of more than 50 yards last week.

Key stat: The Gila Monsters have been shut out in each of their losses. They are averaging 36 points in their victories.

The intrigue: Will the Knights be able to score at least 40 points for the fifth time this season?
