Phoenix Brophy coach Scooter Molander couldn’t remember the last time the Broncos lost two games in a row. Friday night he didn’t want to contemplate dropping a third.
SLIDESHOW: Friday Night High School Football Slideshow
Molander was spared that Friday when the Broncos came out with a crisp, productive first half in all facets and went on to belt Mesa High 37-20 in a 5A Division I nonregion game at Jackrabbit Stadium.
“We came out strong,” Molander said. “Defense got a bunch of three-and-outs, and our offense was clicking. The story of the first half of the season has been our offense shooting itself in the foot. We didn’t do that the first half of this game and look what happened. The second half we went back to that inconsistency and penalties that end up hurting you.”
Brophy (3-3), the defending 5A-I champion, piled up 313 yards of offense in the first two quarters. The Broncos scored on five of their seven possessions in the first half to build a 34-6 lead at halftime. That scoring onslaught included taking the game’s opening drive 81 yards in 12 plays. A good mix of run, pass and play action saw Brophy chew up 5 1/2 minutes of clock. Quarterback Beau Maggi scored from 3 yards out to cap the drive with 6:31 left in the quarter.
Running back Max Leonesio, a workhorse in the first half, scored a pair of touchdowns.
The 6-foot, 180-pound junior scored on a 63-yard run late in the first period and added a 24-yard touchdown jaunt in the first minute of the second quarter. Leonesio finished with 157 yards on 12 carries. He didn’t play in the second half. In the last two weeks vs. Mesa Mountain View and Mesa he has three touchdown runs of 60 yards or more.
“He has great vision and good burst,” Molander said. “He’s fun to watch.”
Molander shuffled in plays with his quarterbacks Maggi and Sam Quinif, both of whom are seniors. Quinif tossed two touchdown passes in the first half — 65 yards to Scott Robson on a perfect post pattern and a 12-yarder to Ryan Suniga, which was tipped into Suniga’s hands by a Mesa defender.
Mesa (2-3), which like Brophy has been inconsistent offensively, had a better week than last week when it was limited to 60 yards. The Jackrabbits finished with 292 yards. One good drive and a couple of long touchdowns (a run out of punt formation and a pass) made coach Kelley Moore feel better at the end of the game than he did at halftime.
“We got a little better on offense, but it’s still not good enough,” Moore said.
