It took a half for the Mesa Mountain View offense to really get clicking but once the Toros got on track, it looked easy.
SLIDESHOW: Friday night high school football
The second-ranked Toros got another solid performance from backup quarterback Brad Heap, who threw for 134 yards and five touchdown passes Friday in a 46-0 rout of Mesa High in the East Valley Region opener for both teams.
“I feel a little more comfortable playing,” said Heap, after completing 14-of-20 passes. “My team always does well and the receivers -- I just throw it out there and they catch it.”
The win keeps Mountain View perfect at 6-0 while Mesa falls to 2-4 .
“He’s getting better every game, every rep,” Toros coach Tom Joseph said of Heap, who was playing his second full game in relief of injured QB Blake Decker.
Heap found tight end Nate Birtcher for scores three times on Friday and got plenty of help from running back Jacom Brimhall, who rushed 19 times for 191 yards.
After a lackluster first half in which Mountain View led 19-0, the Toros stopped Mesa on its first possession of the second half, as Riley Farnsworth and Birtcher sacked Jackrabbit quarterback Kyle Fackrell after Mesa had driven to midfield.
After a 16-yard punt, Mountain View took over and scored on Heap’s 20-yard pass to Justin Orr .
The Jackrabbits couldn’t move the ball when they got it back and Mountain View again took advantage.
The Toros needed just five plays to get in the end zone as Heap hit Connor Knoles on an 8-yard pass to give Mountain View a 33-0 lead .
“They are not a bad football team,” Joseph said of Mesa High. “Their front seven on defense is pretty good.”
The Jackrabbits had some glimpses of brilliance. They held Mountain View to just one score early with a little help from Toro penalties, and escaped with a couple of missed field goals in the first half. But Fackrell threw an interception that Toro defensive back Trent Stapley returned 25 yards to the Mesa 30 with 8:51 left in the first half.
Heap hit Birtcher on their first hookup for a score to give Mountain View a 13-0 lead.
Mesa committed 12 penalties for 115 yards and the teams combined for 135 yards in assessments in the first half.
“There were a couple of penalties that hurt us,” Heap said. “But we pulled through and got the win.”
