Mesa Dobson pounded host Mesa Westwood with its running game Friday en route to a 33-14 victory in both teams’ 5A-I East Valley Region opener. The win gives the Mustangs (4-3) their first win over the Warriors (1-6) in six years and runs their win streak to three games.

“Momentum is what you need going into region and especially since we hadn’t beaten them in six years, it was good to get the monkey off our back,” Dobson coach Tom DeMassa said.

The Mustangs ran the ball 51 times for 305 yards and used four different runners.

“We really moved the ball,” DeMassa said.

Dylan Cortez received most of the early carries, rushing for 110 yards and a touchdown on 12 first-half carries. Cortez finished with 118 yards.

Terrance Martin added 125 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

The Dobson defense continued its strong play for a third straight game. In their prior two, the Mustangs gave up 10 points to Phoenix Alhambra and shut out Phoenix Goldwater.

On Friday, senior linebacker Jared Dabney sacked Westwood quarterback Marshall Davis for a loss of 10 yards in the fourth quarter.

The play helped stall a Warrior drive at a point in the game when they trailed the Mustangs by just 12 points.
