Mesa Dobson had won three in a row. Mesa High had lost three straight (two of them badly). But on Friday night, those streaks were reversed as the Jackrabbits overwhelmed the Mustangs, 45-7, in 5A-I East Valley game.

SLIDESHOW: Friday night high school football

“These kids believe in a miracle-working God,” Mesa coach Kelley Moore said. “They could have crumbled — when you lose like that, ugly things happen — but our kids are resilient, no doubt about it.”

The Jackrabbits (3-4, 1-1) scored 24 points in the first 13 minutes with big plays figuring in each:

• Greg King opened the scoring with a 53-yard TD run after a shanked punt that went five yards.

• Mason Crandell kicked his school-record ninth career field goal, a 24-yarder.

• T.J. Nunez returned an interception 78 yards for a score.

• Nunez recovered a fumble at the Dobson 30.

• Crandell caught his first-ever TD pass at 11:14 in the second quarter to put Mesa up 24-0.

“It felt good to come out and run over people,” Crandell said.

“We really got it right,” Nunez said.

The Jackrabbits scored on their next possession as well to make it five-for-five, as Devotae Kellybrew found paydirt from the 10 to put Mesa on top 31-0 at the half.

“We didn’t play well and Mesa came out and did,” Dobson coach Tom DeMassa said. “We lost our quarterback (Jordan Gruber) early, but (Cesar) Vallejo came in and did a really good job in the second half.”

Gruber might have made a difference as he clicked off runs of 13 and 12 yards on the Mustangs’ second possession before coming up limping. On the next play, he fired the interception right into the waiting arms of Nunez at linebacker.

Dobson (4-4, 1-1) got its lone score in the third quarter. Vallejo directed a nine-play scoring drive to open the second half, completing 1-of-3 passes before Terrance Martin scored from 15 yards out.

Martin also had a half-back option pass of 32 yards to Stanley Montano on the drive.
