Fireworks, a full house and a screaming home crowd kicked off Mesa’s football game Friday night against Phoenix Central.

For the next four quarters, there was plenty more to get excited about as the Jackrabbits crushed the Bobcats for the second year in a row -- this time by a score of 57-0.
Mesa (4-4) insisted it didn’t come in overconfident despite the memory of a 50-0 win over Central last year.
“When you expect to win, sometimes you can get big-headed,” said Mesa quarterback Kyle Fackrell, who had 54 yards passing and two rushing touchdowns. “But we didn’t. We stayed humble and we won.”
“We’ve gotten pounded ourselves three times so we understand what it’s all about,” Mesa coach Kelley Moore said.
The Jackrabbits rushed for 241 yards on 31 carries while the Bobcats (1-7) managed just 35 yards rushing on 24 carries.
“Realistically we should’ve won. No doubt,” Moore said. “But football is football. They came to play, they played hard. … I’m actually impressed with the way their coaches handled the kids and the way their kids played hard.”
Not as hard as Jaymen Green.
The Mesa running back had seven carries for 66 yards, returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, then added a 62-yard punt return for a TD in the fourth quarter.
The Jackrabbits face Mesa Westwood next Friday and Mesa Red Mountain on Nov. 7 to close out the regular season. If they win both games, they have an outside shot at the playoffs.
“We have to win two more,” Moore said. “If we don’t win two more, it won’t matter what happened tonight.”
