Mesa Skyline ripped off 17 straight points in five minutes in the second quarter en route to a 30-12 homecoming win over visiting Scottsdale Horizon in a 5A-II Pima Region matchup Friday night.

SLIDESHOW: Friday night high school football

Skyline’s Mike Bailey, who only last week took on the full reins as starting quarterback, had a big night, rushing 19 times for 108 yards and a touchdown and completing 17 of 25 passes for 197 yards and a 15-yard touchdown.

Teammate Damari Lewis also had a good night, rushing 13 times for 91 yards and a touchdown, catching a touchdown pass from Bailey and also pulling down a key interception in the fourth quarter.

"This was another one of those emotion games," Skyline coach Peter Jonovich said. "We came off a rival game with Desert Ridge, a must-win against Pinnacle, and then homecoming.

"This was a big game. I thought our kids were not real focused in the beginning, but they played real well from the second quarter on."

Horizon (1-7, 1-2) took advantage of the Jaguars’ early lack of focus to score on their first two possessions, including a 51-yard pass from Ryan Stanford to Nate Defrietas shortly after a Skyline fumble.

However, by the second quarter, Skyline's defense caught up to Stanford's passing, and the offense would unleash its 17-point barrage to jump ahead of the visiting Huskies.

The Jaguars’ defense took it up another notch in the second half, coming up with two interceptions and sacking Stanford five times. The Coyotes allowed only 38 total yards in the second half.

Bailey capped the victory with a 6-yard touchdown run, set up by a fourth-down sack of Stanford deep in Horizon territory.

Despite the victory, Skyline (6-2, 2-1) was unable to ascend past third place in the Pima Region, as both Gilbert Desert Ridge and Tempe Marcos de Niza won Friday night.

Skyline will face Marcos de Niza (7-1, 2-1) next week for a shot at moving into second place.

Mr.Dupe

According to the article Skyline played the Huskies & the Jaguars the same night. Skyline must be really good to pull that off. Nice job. Suggest removal of this comment

COYOTE FAN!

The Skyline COYOTES played the Horizon Huskies.

Desert Ridge are Jaguars and Skyline is coyotes!

I am insulted at the unbelievable error.
