McClintock, Chaparral advance at badminton tournament

 In the first day of the 4A state team tournament, two East Valley teams moved on to the second round. McClintock beat Phoenix Greenway 5-3 at Goodyear Millennium, and Chaparral beat Phoenix Washington 5-1 at Chaparral.

The Chargers, who are the No. 5 seed, will next face top-seeded Millennium, and the No. 2 seed Firebirds will play No. 3 seed Phoenix Sunnyslope. Both semifinal matches will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Glendale Independence. In other matches, Millennium beat Phoenix Cortez 5-0 and Sunnyslope beat Independence 5-1.
