This week's prep football capsules

By Les Willsey, Tribune

Here's a look at this weekend's games. All games are Friday unless noted.

5A-I

Mountain View (9-0, 3-0) at Dobson (5-5, 1-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 1501 W. Guadalupe Road, Mesa

Key matchup: Dobson’s best chance is to control the ball and time of possession — a tall order since the Toros can do the same and play better defense.

Key stat: Dobson is 0-3 in games vs. ranked opponents this season (Corona del Sol, Chandler and Hamilton).

The intrigue: Mountain View is trying to nail down the top seed in the playoffs. Dobson is hoping to pull off a major upset to keep miniscule playoff hopes alive.

Red Mountain (5-4, 2-1) at Mesa (5-4, 2-1)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 1630 E. Southern Ave., Mesa

Key matchup: Mesa’s defense has been its most consistent asset throughout the season and must keep tabs on speedy Derek Molina for the Jackrabbits to nab a playoff-clinching win.

Key stat: Mesa knocked off Red Mountain in big games in 2000 and 2007. “Rabbits go for the trifecta this decade.

The intrigue: Mesa clinches a playoff berth with a win; Red Mountain needs a win for confidence and a higher seed in the playoffs.

Highland (5-4, 0-3) at Mesquite (2-7, 0-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 500 S. McQueen Road, Gilbert

Key matchup: Mesquite, despite a rash of injuries, has young players capable of big plays. The Wildcats will need two or three big plays if they envision an upset.

Key stat: Mesquite has lost three straight games and seven of its last eight.

The intrigue: Highland clinches a playoff berth with a win. Mesquite would love to put a wrench in its sister school’s plans.

Alhambra (2-7) at Westwood (1-9)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 945 W. 8th St., Mesa

Key matchup: Westwood’s offense should be good enough to net a season-high in points (better than 25 tonight) and top the Lions, who have wins over lowly Trevor Browne and Maryvale, a combined 2-16.

Key stat: Westwood has dropped six straight games, but it’s lone win is over a 5A-II playoff squad.

The intrigue: The Warriors are looking for a positive end to a difficult first year for coach Greg Mendez. Alhambra may be the opponent the Warriors can use to that end.

Corona del Sol (8-1, 1-1) at Basha (5-4, 1-1)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 5990 S. Val Vista Drive, Chandler

Key matchup: Two of the best defenses in 5A Division I will trade field time tonight. Both are excellent rushing teams that are stout defending the run, so which one succeeds in the passing game may tip the scales.

Key stat: Basha running back Alvin Clark rushed for 165 yards and totaled three touchdowns, which equaled his combined totals of the seven previous games.

The intrigue: Plenty. These two teams aren’t the best of friends to begin with, and while a loss by Basha probably still gets them in the playoffs, there’d still be some scoreboard watching and fuzzy math to figure out.

Mountain Pointe (2-7, 0-2) at Desert Vista (7-2, 2-0)

Time: 8:30 p.m.

Address: 4201 E. Knox Road, Phoenix

Key matchup: Casey Bolena and Ryne Rezac (57 receptions for 828 yards) have been two of the best wideout tandems in the East Valley this season, so the Pride’s defense will need to rebound from a rough night defensively against Basha.

Key stat: The Pride’s defense has allowed 35 points per game in the past month.

The intrigue: This would be a big upset for Mountain Pointe in its final game of the season. For Desert Vista, a win clinches the Central Region title and would be the best regular season finish since 2003.

Brophy (7-3, 3-0) at Mountain Ridge (8-1, 3-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 22800 N. 67th Ave., Glendale

Key matchup: Brophy’s sound defense will have to contain quarterback Kevin Yost and an explosive offense, but the Broncos have evolved into a better offensive team of late, and their ability to run the ball with Max Leonesio and control the clock will be their best defense against Mountain Ridge.

Key stat: Yost has accounted for more than 2,000 total yards and 24 touchdowns this season.

The intrigue: The Desert Valley Region title, which would be Brophy’s fourth consecutive, is on the line. It would also cement a home playoff game for the Broncos (though it’s possible they’d still get one even with a loss).

Desert Mountain (4-5, 0-2) at St. Mary’s (3-6, 0-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 1202 W. Thomas Road (Phoenix College)

Key matchup: Whether it’s forcing turnovers, getting off the field on third down or touchdowns instead of field goals, the Wolves need to make a few plays down the stretch, which they haven’t done in recent weeks and couldn’t do in losing a late lead last year to the Knights.

Key stat: Desert Mountain hasn’t beaten St. Mary’s this decade.

The intrigue: It’s a gotta-have-it win for Desert Mountain to have any chance of getting one of two final playoff spots, and the Wolves probably need either Highland or Mesa to help their cause. A Wolves’ loss means they’re done. St. Mary’s is probably a spot or two short of reaching the postseason.

5A-II

Desert Ridge (7-2, 3-0) at Marcos de Niza (8-1, 2-1)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 6000 S. Lakeshore Drive, Tempe

Key matchup: The Desert Ridge offense against the Marcos defense. Marcos de Niza has yet to give up more than 21 points in a game this season, while Desert Ridge has been held under 27 just once.

Key stat: Desert Ridge has won six straight games since starting the year 1-2.

The intrigue: The winner is the 5A-II Pima Region champion. It would be the first such title for Desert Ridge in school history.

Horizon (1-8, 0-3) at Pinnacle (4-5, 1-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 3535 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix

Key matchup: Pinnacle running back Taylor Stib has to be slowed down for Horizon to have a chance.

Key stat: Pinnacle has lost three straight games to drop below .500. The Pioneers began the year 4-2, including a pair of wins over top-5 power point teams Marcos de Niza and Ironwood Ridge.

The intrigue: The Pioneers need to take care of business and then hope to sneak out a home playoff game next week. Pinnacle currently sits 10th in the power points and would have to move up two spots to do so.

Camelback (2-7) at Skyline (6-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 845 S. Crismon Road, Mesa

Key matchup: The Coyotes should roll if running backs Damari Lewis and Tommy Brown run to their capabilities. Both are approaching 1,000-yard seasons and Camelback doesn’t have a good enough defense to slow them down.

Key stat: Camelback’s victories are against two of the three worst teams in 5A-II, according to power points.

The intrigue: The Coyotes are done with region play, so this game is purely for playoff positioning.

4A-I

Saguaro (9-0) at Cactus (7-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 6330 W. Greenway Road, Glendale

Key matchup: Saguaro has done a fantastic job against some of 4A-I’s best running backs, and will face another stiff test in Cactus tailback Mike Brown.

Key stat: Saguaro will set the 4A record with 29 consecutive wins if they beat Cactus.

The intrigue: A win gives Saguaro the top seed in the 4A-I tournament. Last season, this game was supposed to be a duel, but Saguaro won in a blowout.

Cactus Shadows (3-6, 1-4) at Chaparral (8-1, 4-1)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 6935 E. Gold Dust Ave., Scottsdale

Key matchup: Dwayne Garrett has really come into his own as a star running back for Chaparral. The Falcons have to find a way to keep him in check and make Chaparral beat them through the air.

Key stat: Cactus Shadows has lost its last two games after being ahead late in the fourth quarter or overtime.

The intrigue: Chaparral stays at No. 2 in the power points with a victory. That would put them on the opposite side of the 4A-I bracket from presumed No. 1 Scottsdale Saguaro. Last year, the teams met in the 4A-I semifinals and Saguaro won 12-6.

Apache Junction (7-3, 2-3) at McClintock (5-4, 2-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 1830 E. Del Rio Drive, Tempe

Key matchup: Hayden Tippett leads a solid linebacking corps for McClintock, which must be ready for Apache Junction’s multi-faceted option running attack.

Key stat: Both teams would love to shoot up to the eighth seed and host a playoff game. McClintock sits in ninth and Apache Junction is 11th.

The intrigue: This game is strictly for playoff positioning, unlike last year when McClintock needed — and got — a win to get into the 4A-I tournament.

Paradise Valley (7-2, 3-2) at Shadow Mountain (3-6, 0-5)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 2902 E. Shea Blvd., Phoenix

Key matchup: Shadow Mountain’s defense has been good, but Paradise Valley’s running game can be potent. Tyree Parker was shut down by the Chaparral front last week, but the Matadors don’t have the same personnel in the trenches.

Key stat: Paradise Valley ran for 122 yards last week against Chaparral, its second lowest output of the season.

The intrigue: Paradise Valley is among a host of teams in the mix for the third-through-eighth tournament seeds. The Trojans are currently third, and a win will keep them near the top of this logjam.

4A-II

No. 1 Notre Dame (9-0) at Greenway (8-1)

Time: 7 p.m. Thursday

Address: 3930 W. Greenway Road, Phoenix

TV: Cox Ch. 7

Key matchup: The focus of Notre Dame’s defense will be dual-threat quarterback Greg Walton (1,401 passing yards, 552 rushing yards, 26 touchdowns) while Greenway’s defensive attention will be on running backs Andrew Stutz (907 rushing yards, 16 TDs) and Patrick Foley (411 yards, 11 TDs).

Key stat: The Saints have won 18 straight games and are one victory from the first undefeated regular season in school history.

The intrigue: The winner will capture the Black Canyon Region title and secure a top two seed for the state playoffs.

Queen Creek (6-3, 3-1) at No. 4 Higley (7-2, 4-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 4068 E. Pecos Road, Gilbert

Key matchup: This game could easily turn into a defensive struggle. If it does, a big play by either Queen Creek’s Iggy Castro or Higley’s Kelvin Fisher, who are tied for the region lead with six interceptions, could turn the tide.

Key stat: The Bulldogs have won three of the past four meetings.

The intrigue: A Higley victory will give the Knights their second region title in three years. A Bulldogs win will mean Queen Creek, Higley and Coronado, if it beats Arcadia, will be co-champions.

No. 5 Coronado (8-1, 3-1) at Arcadia (6-3, 1-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 4703 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix

Key matchup: Arcadia quarterback Colby Kirkegaard was a last-minute scratch last week because he was still experiencing pain in his throwing shoulder. He’s back to 100 percent, and that has lifted the team’s confidence level. His play against a defense which has only allowed one QB to throw for more than 150 yards could be the determining factor.

Key stat: The Titans have lost their past three games and have dropped two straight to the Dons.

The intrigue: If Coronado wins, it will be seeded either No. 1 or No. 2 for the state playoffs.

Tempe (4-5, 1-3) at Seton Catholic (5-5, 0-4)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: Mesa Community College, 1833 W Southern Ave.

Key matchup: Seton quarterback Justin Sieczkowski is doubtful with a knee injury. If he can’t go, the play of backup Anthony Wallace, facing a defense which has 15 sacks and six interceptions, will go a long way toward determining the outcome.

Key stat: If the Sentinels lose, they will finish winless in East Sky Region play for the second straight year.

The intrigue: The winner will clinch a playoff berth. The loser won’t automatically be eliminated from the postseason, but it will need a lot of help.

Gila Ridge (4-6) at Williams Field (6-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 2076 South Higley Road, Gilbert

Key matchup: Will Gila Ridge have any answer for Williams Field’s powerful ground game this time around? The Black Hawks had their way in the previous meeting, rushing for 284 yards.

Key stat: Williams Field cruised past Gila Ridge, 53-22, last week in Yuma.

The intrigue: The victor will move on to next Thursday’s independent title game, which will be hosted by the higher seed. Williams Field is No. 1, Liberty is No. 2, Perry is No. 3 and Gila Ridge No. 4.

Perry (7-2) at Liberty (5-5)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 9621 W. Speckled Gecko Drive, Peoria

Key matchup: Three Liberty quarterbacks combined to throw for 295 yards in the teams’ first meeting this season. Perry’s pass defense will have to come up with a much better performance if the Pumas are to prevail.

Key stat: Perry lost to Liberty, 35-20, on Oct. 10.

The intrigue: The victor will move on to next Thursday’s independent title game, which will be hosted by the higher seed. Williams Field is No. 1, Liberty No. 2, Perry No. 3 and Gila Ridge No. 4.

2A

Thatcher (5-5) at Scottsdale Christian (7-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 14400 N. Tatum Blvd., Phoenix

Key matchup: Thatcher has struggled throwing the ball with any consistency this season, so if Scottsdale Christian can bottle up Landon Williams and Blaine Taylor in the backfield and make Thatcher throw, SCA has a good chance of creating turnovers.

Key stat: Thatcher has allowed 37 points per game in its five losses.

The intrigue: Scottsdale Christian begins its march toward a state championship today, and hopes to wipe away the sourness last year’s early playoff exit (and last week’s loss to Valley Christian) left. An unlucky bracket draw means a matchup with No. 1 Phoenix Christian looms, but recent history shows SCA can’t consume itself with that.

Hayden (4-6) at Valley Christian (7-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Address: 6900 W. Galveston St., Chandler

Key matchup: Few have stopped Valley Christian’s vaunted running game to date, led by Blake Argo, Jimmy Oum and Brock Longanecker. Avoiding the Trojans’ penchant for big plays on the ground is Hayden’s only chance of keeping this one competitive.

Key stat: Valley Christian hasn’t lost a first-round playoff game in 11 years.

The intrigue: The playoff bracket sets up nicely for Valley Christian until a possible matchup with No. 2 St. John’s in the semifinals. The Trojans are hot now after they overcame a shaky start to the season with a host of new personnel and returning players switching positions. They believe they can go back to the state title game.

1A playoffs

Tempe Prep (9-1) vs. Mogollon (8-1)

Time: 4 p.m., Saturday

Address: Apache Junction High, 2525 S. Ironwood, Apache Junction

Key matchup: Mogollon runs a lot of misdirection while Tempe Prep thrives on making big plays. This game will likely be won by the defense which does a better job of staying in its lanes and remaining disciplined.

Key stat: Both team’s lone loss has come on the road to Pima. Mogollon fell 22-14, Tempe Prep 58-29.

The intrigue: A trip to the 1A championship game is on the line. If Tempe Prep wins, it would be the first Valley team to advance to the final since Northwest Christian beat Scottsdale Christian in 1996.

Red Mountain needs to fire the offensive coordinator, If you can't run a play move on to something else. Mesa had RM running game nailed as its way to predictable.. Derek Molina is a stud & can run but not with the terrible O line that RM had this year.. Better luck next year... They will be out after next week... Suggest removal of this comment
