Mesa Skyline’s running backs, Tommy Brown and Damari Lewis, felt like running a lot in host Skyline’s 42-7 victory over Phoenix Camelback.
SLIDESHOW: Friday night football action
A mere 334 yards later, in a game with playoff implications, their running helped properly position the team to earn a decent playoff seed. Skyline, the No. 11 seed, will face Avondale La Joya Friday in Avondale.
“The kids are definitely ready for the playoffs,” Skyline coach Peter Jonovich said. “I think we are all coming in very well rested, and I think that will make a major difference.”
Lewis and Brown also put an exclamation point on the victory by both obtaining over a thousand yards on the season. Lewis finished the season with a total of 1,019 yards, and Brown finished with 1,026 yards.
“Those kids are extremely competitive, and they really have a lot of talent,” Camelback coach Daryl Phillips said of the running backs. “But make no mistake, they are going to the playoffs because that is a solid team on both sides of the football.”
Skyline struggled in the early part of the game when Tommy Brown fumbled on the 1-yard line and it was scooped up by DeMarcus Stephens, who returned it 99 yards to give Camelback it’s only score of the game.
Lewis responded with a 65-yard rush, and Michael Bailey’s touchdown gave the Coyotes a 14-7 lead going into halftime in a must-win game.
The competitive phase of the game ended in the second half. Brown had a 75-yard run, and Lewis had a 15-yard rushing touchdown before Brown scored on an 82-yard scamper that all but shattered the spirits of the Spartans.
“I think we’ve overcome a lot, and really improved on a lot of aspects of our game this season,” Jonovich said. “I feel really good about going into the playoffs. We were able to play all of our seniors, and get everyone some rest. However, I did want to make sure both our running backs got over a thousand yards."
