Mesa Mountain View finished its regular season undefeated, crushing 5A-I East Valley Region competitor Mesa Dobson, 49-14 on Friday at Dobson High School. Although finishing their season undefeated was nice, the ultimate goal for the Toros is winning the state championship.
SLIDESHOW: Friday night football action
“We start all over (in state),” Mountain View coach Tom Joseph said. “We’ve got to win next week or it doesn’t matter.”
Friday’s win secured the top seed for the Toros when the 5A-I state playoffs begin Friday when Mountain View hosts Tucson.
“That’s the goal, you can’t ask for anything better,” Mountain View quarterback Blake Decker said of the No. 1 seeding. “We’re coming in 10-0 with the number one seed and that’s all we can ask for at this point.”
He said he was impressed by his team’s performance against Dobson.
“We practiced hard all week. We knew this is a set-up game going into the playoff so we had to play good. It was fun.”
Decker had three touchdown passes, including a 67-yard strike to wide receiver Connor Knoles. Decker was 15 for 19 passing on the night for 301 yards.
Mountain View ran the ball 35 times for 269 yards.
Almost half of the Toros running yards were by Jacom Brimhall, who had 116 yards on 14 carries.
Dobson quarterback Cesar Vallejo was 4 for 15 passing for 126 yards. Dobson wide receiver Emilio Gutierrez had the longest touchdown of the night, returning a kickoff 95 yards for a score that temporarily kept the Mustangs within reach at 14-7. The Toros scored touchdowns on five consecutive drives after that.
Dobson’s finished its season 5-6 and wound up 18th in the power point rankings, two spots away from earning a rematch with the Toros in the first round.
