Queen Creek's Hardt 3rd in 4A-II cross country

By Cary L. Tyler, For the Tribune

It was not the way Queen Creek’s Sherod Hardt wanted to end this season.

SLIDESHOW: 2008 Arizona High School Cross Country Championships

The junior was a favorite in Saturday’s 4A-II state cross country championship at Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix, but finished third, in large part because his race produced the day’s fastest runners in all classes.

Flagstaff Sinagua’s Brian Shrader defended his title, running a 15:15.25, while Cottonwood Mingus’ Tim Freriks finished second at 15:20.50.

Hardt, second last year, finished with a 15:38.65, but while disappointed, said it was a learning experience.

“I ran thirty seconds faster than last year, so it was not a total bad day,” Hardt said. “I’ve been training to be more consistent.”

Hardt’s father, coach Shaun Hardt, said his son ran a little tight, but was pleased with his and the team’s effort.

“We’re much younger than we were last year,” Hardt said, referring to the boys’ fourth place finish in 2007 compared to their 12th place finish this year. “They’re young, but they’re learning and improving.”

Phoenix Arcadia’s Kevin Rayes finished ninth in the 4A-II boys race, helping his team to a seventh-place finish. Scottsdale Notre Dame finished ninth, while Gilbert Perry was 14th and Gilbert Higley 16th.

In 4A-I, Tucson Sabino’s Alex Evans captured the state individual title, while Tucson Catalina Foothills captured the team title, with Cave Creek Cactus Shadows placing second.

Tempe McClintock finished seventh and Scottsdale Saguaro was ninth.
