By Cary L. Tyler, For the Tribune

Scottsdale Saguaro dashed to a second place finish in the 4A-I state cross country meet Saturday at Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix.

SLIDESHOW: 2008 Arizona High School Cross Country Championships

A tight pack enabled the Sabercats to finish 11 points behind state champion Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor and easily outdistance third place Nogales.

Carolyn Brown and Loren Wynn paced Saguaro, finishing seventh and ninth, respectively.

“They ran awesome,” Saguaro coach John Prather said. “I thought we were the second best team in the state. I knew how good O’Connor was and I knew it would take our best race and some of them faltering for us to have a shot. We took care of our part, but they had a good day, too.”

Scottsdale Chaparral finished 11th in 4A-I.

Christina Price of Tucson Sabino was the individual champion.
